Graham, i can’t hear you and you can’t hear me so i know what i don’t know why our technical team is trying to decipher that, but um yeah exactly i’m just going for it exactly all right.
So we now have eliminated graham from the process, which is great.
We don’t have to deal with him he’s over he’s over there or over there or over here guys over there.
So uh um.
I don’t know how to do that.
My friend, so that’s not me.
All right: well, let’s just get: let’s just get her going all right! This is uh.
This is a technical issue between the it department and, graham graham, can you hear me now yep all right.
Finally he’s back there.
He is guys all right, graham so uh.
What do you want to introduce our myself and all that we’ll start from the beginning again? Here we go whatever you want to do.
Welcome talking five fans to another, exciting episode of neil a deal featuring neil the deal himself, this being friday, i’m sure you’ve got a special profile lined up for us who do you have well, graham, it’s nice to hear your voice there.
We i kind of lost you for a bit right.
We could see it, but we couldn’t hear you so there we go all right thanks a lot for having me out again, graham yep, we got a great fighter out of mexico.
Today, we’re going to talk about uh, a guy that was uh, i watched quite a number of his fights, probably 10 15 fights a lot of title fights and he’s right out of mexico he’s one of the best uh fighters in mexico.
I i i think he is anyways we’re going to talk about uh, marco antonio barrera tapia, marco antonio barrera tapia.
Now he goes by the name, marco antonio barrera, in the ring, so he dropped the tapia from his name.
I guess maybe it was just too many too many words.
I guess right for him, so he dropped the last happy apart of it and he’s got a couple of nicknames.
We’Ve all known him from we used to call him el beretta, el beretta.
Isn’T that a gun, a beretta or something yeah, the babyface assassin that was his other little handle was the babyface assassin, so he’s a mexican fighter, guys uh fantastic fighter.
If you go watch any of his fights, they’re exciting, he’s a very exciting man, very exciting fighter and he’s definitely he’s he’s a in his in his divisions.
He was always at the top.
He was a lineal champion a three-time world champion.
I mean he’s got a lot.
He’S got a lot of accolades under his belt, so he was born uh january 17th, 1974.
That makes him 47 years old in mexico city mexico.
He fought in six divisions, uh super fly, weight, super bantamweight, phantom weight, lightweight featherweight and super featherweight, so he had a number of divisions that he was uh classes that he was fighting in and uh.
He won three titles in titles and three weight classes.
So that’s pretty good, you know he went up and down the line and he won titles and all of them.
So that’s pretty good uh.
He won the wbo junior featherweight title uh twice so good for him between 1995 and 2001.
, so ring magazine and the lineal featherweight titles between 2001 and 2003 and the unified wbc and ibf super featherweight titles between 2004 and 2007.
.
So he’s definitely had a a career.
Where he’s oh he’s, pretty pretty much been a title holder, almost right off the get-go.
You know what i mean.
Graham every all those years he’s had a title on him.
You know so that’ll tell you how good he was as an amateur.
He was a tremendous amateur with a record of 104 and four, so he only lost four out of 108 fights.
So that’s pretty damn good.
He was a five-time mexican uh champion in mexico.
Five times so he’s he’s definitely well known in mexico and he won a lot of titles there and he was a national.
He was a national champion um.
He was 56 and 0 in his amateur career before he finally lost a fight right.
So that’s pretty good.
He was 56 and oh as an amateur, so is uh.
Then he turned pro total fights pro fights 75.
He had 67 wins seven losses in one draw uh or no no, no contest, i guess you’d call it.
I think he was disqualified.
He was a disqualification.
Um he had 44 kos out of those 75 fights and he turned pro in 1989 and started on a 43 fight win streak, which is amazing, 43 fights straight.
He was 43-0 and uh at the time he started in 89.
He was only 15 years old.
Graham, he started his pro career at 15.
.
Like that’s unheard of really wow um in 1990, he had seven fights in 1991.
He also had seven fights in 92.
He began winning his first pro title.
The mexican super flyweight title championship in 1993 had six bouts um and he attended.
He defended his title a number of times that year um 1993.
1994.
He was uh, he was go.
He decided he was gon na stop boxing for a bit, go to university and get a lawyer’s degree, which is pretty interesting.
You know in the middle of being one of the world’s best boxers, he decides he wants to go to school and be a lawyer.
So, that’s that’s pretty cool, that’s pretty beautiful and then he continued his boxing career after he got.
The uh got his lawyer’s degree and uh.
He started uh.
He started fighting oh hold on here.
Uh you started, you started fighting different guys, bigger guys all the way up.
Right.
Just give me a quick second here i think i mean yeah yeah.
I made a little mistake here, guys, sorry about that, all right! This is gon na, be it oh! No! No! No all right, uh, there’s a bunch of notable fights.
Let’S just go over that, so he fought eric morales.
That was a big one for him.
He fought haseem ahmed, which is a big one for him.
Uh amir khan was a big one for him uh.
He definitely he did.
He did a lot of things over the years uh in the title, fights that were amazing um.
He won most of the title, fights that i saw him in and uh he’s.
Definitely one of those guys that that definitely you got ta look out, for he was never out of any fight as far as any of the ones that i saw um.
He definitely he’s uh he’s he’s one of those guys that he’s kind of a sleeper name but um.
If you see any of his fights he’s, definitely he’s kicking butt right.
So, let’s just go on with a little bit of his pro career here then he was the uh lineal champion the ibo uh, which gives him the four titles.
He won that on june uh 22nd 2002 pereira defeated morales in a rematch.
He fought morales originally and uh.
I believe he he lost the first one by a.
It was a really sort of controversial thing between him and morales, so he uh he.
He did a lot of things uh going forward all the way through his career, um, right right, all the way up into the 2000s.
He fought all the way up in about two 11.
I believe he retired he uh.
He had a bunch of other notable fights.
He fought a guy named johnny tapia, graham you ever heard of no.
Are they related? Graham? Can you hear me yeah? I don’t think he can hear him so heavyweight title holder.
He also fought kevin kelly uh.
He defeated kevin kelly.
He defeated johnny, tapia and uh.
He won by a unanimous decision uh over morales, the second fight, but he declined to take morales wbc belt.
He just didn’t want to have it november.
16.
2013.
He actually fought manny pacquiao, so he’s fighting all the best guys in the world.
I mean he’s not he’s not ducking anybody, you know what i mean.
Graham, can you hear me out there, graham tonight or yeah, you can hear me, but i can’t hear you all right, so he fought manny pacquiao, but pereira lost.
He lost his lineal championship to pacquiao, which means he lost all four titles and the ring magazine title to pacquiao, so that was that was a bit of a bad one for him right uh.
In 2001 he went up and weighed.
He went up in a weight division and he started fighting at lightweight and he fought uh like we were saying, naseem hamad and he handed the british hamad his first loss ever of his career uh, so hamad that was his first loss and uh the featherweight championship.
That’S what he won.
He won the lineal featherweight championship from uh from hamad and uh.
That was a 12-round decision also that year he also on april uh.
18Th 1997 pereira was given a chance to avenge the loss in the rematch and uh.
He was fighting a guy also named uh jones junior jones, so he fought this junior jones guy apparently twice and in the first one he lost.
He lost his titles, but in the rematch he won so he’s one of those guys.
That seems to come back and forth and back and forth and back and forth you know what i mean he he wins.
He loses, he wins, he loses wins.
He loses.
I remember seeing this one too, he was uh.
Graham, you know uh boxing after dark we’ve talked about that show a couple of times used to be on yeah.
So i remember watching the first show boxing after dark and it was barrera was fighting, was finding a guy named kennedy mckinney and he stopped mckinney in the 12th round and uh.
That was a really good fight too.
There was a lot of a lot of stuff going on in that fight.
So if you want to check that one out guys go to go check out, mckinney and uh and barrera, then he went on to defeat a bunch of uh former champions wbo champion jesse benavidez, and he also beat former champion orlando fernandez uh.
He he suffered his first, like i said his first career loss was to junior jones and he lost his titles.
He lost all the titles to him, so that was that was very.
That was kind of bad for him.
You know what i mean um, you know when that happens.
What are you gon na? Do you? You got four titles, one you wake up in the morning with four titles and you go to bed at night with none that must be a real sinking feeling, if you know what i mean like it, doesn’t get much worse than that so uh on the on April 18th 97.
He had a chance to avenge that loss in the rematch against uh against jones and uh.
At that time.
He he he was, he defeated him, but then he no no sorry he lost again in the rematch and then he decided he was going to retire like he took a hiatus of retirement, but he came back pretty quickly.
So in the you know, he was going to make a comeback in 98.
he had three prep fights and then he was given the opportunity to fight for the wbbo super bent and weight championship.
He won the title.
He won that one defeating richie wenton by ko in the uh in the fourth round 2000 barrero was defeated by the ubc super bantamweight title holder of the time and uh in 2006.
He fought twice against a guy named rocky juarez rocky juarez.
If you guys want to check out that fight pereira and juarez uh, he he won uh, both fights against juarez one was the unanswered decision.
The first one was a split decision uh in march 2007 and seven barrera lost his that wbc super featherweight title to a fellow countryman.
I’Ve got another mexican guy that we’re going to talk about in a future episode for sure, and i liked him too, it was a juan manuel marquez.
I don’t know if you know him graham manuel marquez, not really all right.
Well later.
In 2007 he fought our buddy from the philippines again manny pacquiao, so he literally fought him twice and uh in the rematch.
He lost the unanimous decision to pacquiao again so that was it 2008.
He moved up and weighed like i said 2009.
.
He fought amir khan and lost in the fifth round tko, so he lost to amir khan as well, and we all we had a little episode on amir and amir if you’re listening out there buddy we’re thinking about you hope, you’re doing well and if you want To come on and talk to us we’d be more than happy to have you out here when you’re you’re over here in canada.
I know you live in england, but you do have a place here in canada, so you want to come out man.
I’D love to have you so guys we’re at this um antonio barrera guy got to check out some of his fights.
He he was amazing.
He uh he retired.
He had one last fight.
He fought a few fights in 2010, not much 2011.
He fought his last fight against a guy named jose aries of the dominican republic and he scored a second round tko, and that was his final fight.
That was it that was his career and uh in retirement.
Since 2009 he’s been a commentator for espn’s deportees, a weekly boxing show, graham actually do you know this boxing show is deportes in espn, maybe that’s the mexican version of it in mexico.
I i’m assuming right but uh.
The show is called lopez lopez, which means in english blow by blow blow by blow and uh it’s on friday nights and i guess it’s in mexico, friday night’s live, they go live on friday nights and it’s a live show.
So that’s what he’s been doing.
I guess he’s just been hanging out with the family and friends and doing his little show and chilling out probably helping some of the kids with uh your boxing careers and stuff, like that.
So you know antonio uh, marco, mr barrera.
Thank you very much for the stellar career you’re, a fantastic fighter, tons of power.
He was amazing in the ring uh.
You don’t hear much about him out of the ring, but in the ring he was really good, so check out any of those notable fights.
We talked about guys, we’ll we’ll see you on monday.
Have yourselves a safe weekend: uh stay warm if you’re in a cold environment like we are yeah and uh and just stay safe out there, because things are really uh seem to be heating up.
If you know what i mean so take care of yourselves have yourself a good weekend neal the deal we’ll see you on monday, thanks for coming out like shares, subscribe comments.
