Hello boxing fans around the world, thank you for joining us on talking fight for yet another edition of neil the deal featuring neil the deal himself, who’s continuing his exploration of great young, boxers out of the philippines, and this being international women’s day.
I understand you’ve got a female fighter lined up for us hey good evening, graham yeah good evening yeah.
How are you today man, everything going? Well, i hope awesome great yes, excellent! Well, i hope everything’s going well with you guys.
I hope you all had a great weekend.
Mine was fantastic.
Weekends are always great, but yes, i’d like to uh i’d like to say to all the women around the world uh happy women’s day, international women’s day and uh.
I understand it’s.
It’S a global day celebrating social, economic, cultural and political achievements for women.
So that’s fantastic.
You know and uh.
You know we’re going to do a segment today on a filipino fighter, probably the most decorated, uh amateur filipino fighter and uh.
Her name is jose gabuco, jose cabuco gabuco, so she’s uh born march 30th 1987, which would make her 33 years old right now, she’s from pareto princesa palawan, philippines.
No! Actually, because i’m getting you know interested in this there’s a lot of islands agram in the philippines.
I guess different small islands and stuff well, there’s something like 6 000 islands.
Yeah there’s something crazy.
I didn’t realize they had all these islands but anyways wherever she’s from this uh palawan philippines island is apparently like a paradise, so uh it is on my bucket list.
Yeah that one that would looked beautiful, i was like wow, that’s a really beautiful spot, so yeah um anyways, jose it’s uh, i’m hope i’m hoping you’re watching i’m hoping uh.
You see the neil.
The deal show we’re talking about you and hopefully everybody around the world.
They’Ll, give you a little bit of the credit that you do considering you are still an amateur um.
I don’t really know.
I haven’t been able to see that there’s a lot of filipino women fighters as of yep, i’m sure they’re coming up, but this uh, this lady josie is uh, like i said one of the uh one of the she’s at the top of the game for the Women out there and uh the olympics are coming up and she’s hoping to become part of the olympics.
That would be her ultimate goal.
I believe, but we’re gon na go over some of her uh, some of her career right now, guys and gals and uh.
It’S it’s! It’S really good so, like i said so, she works in the shoes she fights out of the division, light featherweight.
Now i was like light featherweight.
Isn’T that straw weight? So that’s it! So i don’t know the thing was she was talking about in an interview if they have even a division for that size in the olympic straw weight? I don’t know for women anyways right, so i guess if they do um bring a straw weight or light featherweight division into the olympics.
Uh! That’S what she’s going to be fighting at.
I believe it’s under 49 kilos is light flyweight, so she anyway, she started boxing.
Uh in 2003, she’s presently enlisted in the philippines navy.
So um, i don’t know if it’s full-time or part-time, but she’s been enlisted in the philippines navy for quite quite a number of years and uh.
She won the first uh ever gold medal in the aiba women’s world, boxing championships uh from the philippines, so she’s the first one to win a gold medal for the philippines as a woman um.
So that’s why i figured today was the day we would uh celebrate her and her accomplishments, and hopefully you guys will all enjoy this, and i i thought it was great, so uh she’s definitely uh from what i see she’s the most successful female boxer in the History of the southeast asian games with a record five gold medals all right over a 10-year span, so she won gold medals in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2019.
.
So over that stretch that’s pretty much 10 years and every time they have the games, she seems to come out on top.
So i watch some of her fights guys and yeah she’s, like she’s, very good she’s she’s got all she’s got all the skill.
All the talent she’s definitely got a big heart she’s, a single mom, which is interesting too.
She she uh she’s a single mom and she she balances being a mother and uh and training.
You know and her son is a big boxing fan so good for him.
He’S always, apparently he he roots on mom like crazy.
You know what i mean tells all his buddies at school.
Hey, my mom’s fighting.
You know so she’s she’s, you know she’s doing she’s doing great in both worlds.
You know she’s got her son and she and she’s got a great career, so we’re gon na go over some of her amateur totals.
Then like we just talked about the five gold medals in the southeast asian games, but in uh 2009.
She was also in the asian indoor game, so i guess they have different different games or something over in asia, but she’s participated in pretty much all of them and she’s done amazing.
So she won a bronze medal in 2009 uh in 2012 at the world championship.
She won a gold medal and a bronze medal, and in 2019 in the asian championship she won a gold medal.
So her totals are the five plus she’s got seven gold medals and two bronze medals in her career.
So, like i said, she’s she’s, the most successful female boxer, congratulations, josie and keep it up.
You know most successful female boxer in in the philippines.
As far as i can see – and there are a couple other, ladies that are are doing really well as well and uh – we might just talk about them in future episodes, obviously and uh and yeah.
I guess she’s she’s kind of a mentor to everybody.
I would think being uh who she is and uh and how, how she’s accomplished herself in her career, so we’re gon na talk a little bit uh.
She earned a spot, apparently in the philip she a spot on the philippines national team, after winning a gold medal.
At the 2004 national open, so she does have um.
She does have some ends.
I guess for the national team in the olympics so, like i say, we’re hoping to see her in the olympics, and i know that was one of her ultimate goals.
So if you guys have any, you know, comments or anything about that.
If you know anything about she’s, actually qualified graham have they have they done the qualifiers out there as of yet, i believe the qualifiers have taken place before the pandemic actually started um.
Hopefully she has qualified, then if her intention is to go to the olympics, maybe a quick little google search could verify that, but we can announce that to the viewers tomorrow.
We don’t have to do that now.
Yeah sure yeah we’ll see if they don’t really have a lot of information on it.
I guess you have to look more under the olympic trials of that region, etc, etc.
So we’ll do a little bit of digging we’ll give you the answer tomorrow, but if not guys, if you guys have a comment or anybody out, there knows uh if she did qualify, please let us know that would be great and i really hope she does, because Honestly she deserves it.
You know what i mean.
Graham she’s worked really hard.
Uh she’s represented her country, absolutely amazingly.
Over the last 10 12 years, um and, like i say, she’s the most decorated female boxer in the philippines.
So really, if anybody deserves it, i guess it would be her and because of her age, i think that’s what she was a little concerned about herself.
The way is, she is 33 years old.
So probably you know that this olympics coming up would be the one that she’s really wants to get involved with.
You know what i mean and then uh you know.
Maybe she’ll hang up the gloves after that.
Maybe that’s the maybe that’s the cherry on top right, but it sounded like it anyways.
That was like her ultimate goal now is to get on the olympics and win a gold medal at the olympics, so good for her um she’s, the only sec.
It’S funny um she’s, she’s she’s, one of four recipients in 2012 of athlete of the year award by the philippine sportswriter association, so um.
I know there was a couple other i know.
Uh donato, donaire or nordito.
Donaire was also one of the guys who received that in 2012.
uh there was a philippines baseball team uh.
That was also given that recognition and uh and and somebody else but um that that that in itself you know being athlete of the year award for the whole uh country is a really big one.
I would think you know it’s it’s a big one right.
So you know i’m really hoping for that.
She got uh she qualified for the olympics because, after i looked at uh what she’s done over her careers, i like again she really she really does deserve it, and i’m really pulling for you josie if you’re, if you’re out there we’re all pulling for you.
I hope you make it um, you really deserve it and take care of yourself and, let’s hope, to see her hey, graham, the upcoming olympics, i’d love to absolutely like seeing the best of the best at the olympics, and she certainly seems like a good one.
All those gold medals behind her right now, she’s, obviously uh primed.
If you ask me, oh absolutely man, absolutely she’s she’s she’s gon na she’s gon na be uh.
I don’t know if she’s gon na turn pro you know what i mean it sounds to me like she wants to do the olympics and maybe maybe she’ll turn pro, but you know we’re gon na do a little more digging into into some of these.
The women’s pro fighting and see if there are any real you know women out there.
We obviously know there’s a lot of girls in the states that are fighting in different countries.
So if you guys have any ideas or know any know anything that we don’t know out there in the philippines or anywhere around the world of uh up and coming great women fighters, we’d love to hear about them and we’d love to uh love.
To do an episode on them or whatever you guys could uh give us a little tidbit on that so again, happy uh, happy international women’s day to all the women out there.
Thank you very much for everything, guys and uh.
Let’S just uh we’ll see you tomorrow, graham seven o’clock, all right, that’s great yeah, yep, yeah! So um, you guys have yourself a good evening and josie congratulations on the fantastic career and hopefully we’ll uh we’ll see in the olympics all right.
