So let me get to the main story of the day.
This is, as i said, recorded regarding a book which i rarely ever discuss.
As a matter of fact, i think this is the first book i’ve ever discussed, with the exception of perhaps lou eisen’s book on controversial fights in boxing history.
But let’s get on to this one shortlisted for the 2021, william hill sports book of the year award damage the untold story of brain trauma in boxing it’s now now out in paperback, written by a noted boxing journalist and author tristixon.
The book covers the old story.
A fighter gains fame drives fast.
Cars makes piles of cash and dates.
Beautiful women then comes the inevitable fall that leads to foods, drugs, depression, poverty and illness.
This dark and repetitive, narrative has been playing out for over a hundred years.
The book focuses on punch drunk syndrome, first discovered by doctors in 1928, which later became known as dementia fujilistica.
Today we call it chronic traumatic enzyme, philosophy, ensa, la or cte.
The secret history of this disease in boxing has never really been fully told.
Until now, in the book, dixon uncovers the difficult truths of boxing and cte and chronicles the lives of fighters affected by it.
He introduced some of the sport’s biggest names, including george foreman, freddie, roach ward, to try to understand why no one wants to discuss cte or take responsibility for it.
Ultimately, dixon takes aim on what boxing can do to help the warriors, who sacrifice their health seeking glory in the ring.
Uh we’ll look at this, but finally to try this work address the issue and help fighters uh get the help they deserve says greg.
Bishop senior writer on sports illustrated anyone who loves boxing.
Even the sport’s most diehard supporters must take a longer and more serious.
Look at the issues that tristicson writes about with such nuance and humanity says: khalifa sinha out of the new yorker dixon has published an important book about boxing one that all boxing fans should read precisely because some of them may find that it affects their fandom, says.
Matt christie out of boxing news dixon, is a man of strong principles and a journalist of high standing in the sport he’s the author.
Perhaps the most important book the fight game has ever seen.
Damage is wonderfully written and contains some sumptuous story telling says mark kreigle, espn commentator and author of its own book, the good son, the life of uh, rape, mancini damage, isn’t merely excellent or overdue.
It should be mandatory reading for anyone who claims to care about boxing with deep research and dogged reporting touristics and has managed to remain both clear-headed and compassionate, says dave hannigan of the irish times aaron pryor’s cautionary tale is told interest dickson’s, fascinating book damage.
The untold story of brain trauma in boxing dixon’s disturbing book ensures boxing no longer has any excuse and says mark gallagher of the irish mail damage is a harrowing book on the long-term effects of brain injury in the ring.
It’S a wake-up call.
A sport needs four years in the making.
This book should be essential reading for anyone within the passing interest in boxing and finally, thomas gerbassi of ring magazine.
This is a book that should be required reading for anyone involved in boxing.
It’S not an easy read, and upon finishing it, you may look on the sport in a different way, but that’s necessary, and i’ve said this uh before with respect to deontay wilder uh.
I think he was concussed in his last fight and uh should hang up the gloves, get onto training and or promoting and or managing, but stay out of the ring for his own health um.
That brings us to the end of today’s episode.
I want to thank you join me here on talk and fight for another episode of boxing news today.
