A special episode of knuckle up with no none other than yours, truly mike gore emma mann, cedric ben in the den and today we have a special guest for you, and that is maddie harris maddie.
Thank you for taking the time out to come and join us before your big fight, that’s up and coming, i believe, a couple weeks down two weekends from now uh next friday.
Ah there we go next friday.
So what have you been up to since the last time we talked to you brother? I said what have you been up to since the last time we talked um training.
Wait.
Did we speak after my first fight yeah? We did.
We did after that yeah.
I had another one since then before you get on to that quick question, because i didn’t get a chance to ask you about that that first fight, how did you feel by the way i’m cedric by the way box? It goes nice to meet you champ um? How did you feel uh um going into? I know you got your amateur experience, but you know everyone feels different and going into the pro ranks.
How did you feel like like that? Were you where you i mean? I got your highlights watching on my other laptop right here, so obviously you look pretty comfortable in there um, but like just inside your head, how? What was your mentality going into it? Was it different than obviously amateur yes or no um? I was very much going into the to the pro fight, so i’m really relaxed um.
I don’t know.
I just feel comfortable, i’m confident in in the work that i’ve put in um, i’m confident in the the level of the guys that i’ve sparred and done rounds with i i’m not in a in in any kind of way but uh.
I i’ve been in there with guys who are who operate at world level so going so going in there with anything less than that is it i feel comfortable.
I feel very comfortable, and especially at my current age, i’m only 22 years old and i i’ve had a handful of amateur fans, but i’m on to the pro ranks now and um.
Like i said, i i feel with everything that, with all the hard work that i’ve put in and with all the rounds that i’ve done with these top level, operators um and the work i do with my coaches, i feel i always feel comfortable and relaxed going Into these fights nice nice nice, we got.
We got a couple questions from our friend over in the uk.
There, man carl over at last, spell boxing.
He asked uh matty your next fight uh is next friday.
Is it the liverpool card? That’S the one! Yes, liverpool, and he says he will be there in the press area – look forward to an interview after your victory, so there carl maddie will be on the lookout for you, brother, after his victory because yeah i know he’s going to come through with a big.
We got to we got to see a devastating knockout right, yeah.
Of course, another big knockout, that’s right! That’S right! So um since uh yeah man, i guess you’ve been super busy since the last time we talked you’ve had another fight going on you’re, now improved to 2-0 um.
What uh? What have you like? Have you intensified your training since then? Is there anything new that you’re adding to your your game? That’S you haven’t had before that you’re, you know yeah.
I suppose we kind of um a lot of the work i’m doing at the minute is kind of solidifying and improving on the stuff that i already do.
I’M already i’m always learning i’m always looking to to try and learn new things.
I’M always watching videos from boxes.
Uk stateside past present um watching the best that’s right and always always studying the game, studying the game right exactly i’m a student of the game and i always walking um, i’m actually coming over um to the states in august.
I think: okay, okay, oh yeah, yeah! We’Re we’re actually we’re in canada right by the border, but we’re right by the state, so we can take over there too, and i got ta as you can see.
I got a gym right here, so you’re more than welcome to train here too.
Whenever you come to canada, yeah, okay, perfect perfect, i was gon na say because i’m not sure how which side which side of canada are we on, because we’re on um right by the mystery again right by the michigan border.
I’M like five minutes by by crunk gym and all the detroit gyms, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, i’m actually going out there to meet uh howard, knight, okay, okay, okay, do something for him out there: yeah uh, he’s in new jersey, so yeah, okay, Okay, yep yeah! That’S why i’m going to be based for a few weeks, as i said, i’m always trying to learn off of anyone to anyone, and i take the bits that work for me and the bits that don’t work for me and aside from who uh to get the Best out of me, but i’m always willing to listen and learn from uh anyone.
That’S kind of uh have anything to do with boxing really yeah.
Definitely i can, i can say, uh since the last time we’ve talked man and watching you go from um.
You know, leaving the the unpaid ranks in the paid ranks uh your last fight.
You, you were a lot more calm cool collected.
You were more reserved.
I noticed that you um you, you look like you’ve been working on picking your shots a little more effectively.
Um is that one of the things you’ve been working on since the last time we talked because it really does start to show on the ring yeah.
Definitely um i’ve been working on being a lot more economical but believe it or not.
Uh, as i said, not nobody actually knows this, because i didn’t say it to anyone: exclusive news, exclusive news.
Only i’m talking fight exactly this is uh exclusive, but i was ill the whole of that fight week.
I don’t know wow yeah.
I had the flu and i was oh and even going into the ring.
I was ill and i felt like i couldn’t breathe through my nose, so i was kind of in a bit more of a rush to get out there, because i was thinking but that that that shows that shows your your your boxing maturity, because one thing i Always tell tell the box is like when you’re inside the ring, like never show your opponent, that you’re tired or hurt no matter how bad it is just act like you’re good, and you can go 12 rounds like it’s.
Nothing, no matter how tight or just just, never show your opponent that you’re tired of earth, so you just you just proved it right there, because nobody, if no, if you wouldn’t, have said that i guarantee nobody would have known that you weren’t you weren’t feeling that Well, right and if your opponent would have known that he would have jumped all over you and made it, you know made it tougher than it should have been right, yeah exactly um.
I remember hearing like after the fact um golovkin was really all going into the jacobs fight or something like that, and i was thinking um if he can kind of get through against someone like that.
It’S being capable for me so yeah yeah yeah.
But i remember the it was the week it was the um i came down with it.
The day before i had to travel up to the hotels to start week so – and i was just thinking what are the odds of this thomas wow – it produced one of the best knockouts best, one of the best one punch, knockouts um and the obviously uh.
I was out sparring with dillian white for the white fury fight in the lead up to my fight.
I think that might have been why i got ill because i was i landed on the saturday before my flight uh within seven days, or something like that.
So i got back from portugal um and then had two days at home and had to go straight up to newcastle uh so that yeah it was a busy week.
But i remember in that fight.
The commentators were saying, like uh, that they’ve never seen there for an uppercut like that before a few weeks earlier.
Obviously, it’s not on the same kind of level, but the the mechanics and everything behind the shot is still the same right.
So uh yeah.
It was a bit baffled by them comments, but yeah.
It was a great performance, despite whatever adversity i i’d like to get through.
Has your opponent been disclosed to you for uh for your next fight? Yes and no um.
I’Ve had a few names mentioned to me, but i’m not a 100 sure on any of them um, as in i’m not sure which ones are available.
I i i don’t.
I won’t find out who i’m fighting until the fight week, really, even if my coach and manager know they won’t tell me they just they don’t want to sneak you know and they just wan na they want you to treat everybody else.
The same man just get in there and knock him out yeah exactly they want me to go in there and um perform to the best of my ability, regardless of the level of opponent so and yeah so um, which i i don’t understand, because i would always Do that anyway, yeah when the lights are on and when it’s show time uh, i always like yeah, it’s a different story.
It’S like turning on that switch right exactly exactly it doesn’t matter who stood across with me in the ring right i’ll be switched on regardless.
So, with uh, with with your couple of your last two wins here, are you finding it harder um, as as the winds keep racking up to find opponents? Are you having trouble um kind of i’m definitely struggling with asparagus, especially after that last last knockout um? Because of the the kind of viciousness of it yeah, it’s very difficult to get aspiring partners in, but is what it is.
I’M gon na have to um.
I’M gon na have to try and get as much work as i can uh.
When i come over to the states yeah definitely you’re gon na have to find some big guys, man, because you know you’re you’re, tall and you’re tall and you’re, and you got some weight behind you man.
So you know, i guess you you got to eventually find somebody that can push you around in the ring right and how and then just another quick go ahead.
Go ahead finish what you’re saying? No! No! No! I was going to say you carry on um.
Just specifically about sparring, you know it’s always hard finding uh uh.
Well, it’s hard finding good sparring partners period, specifically big guys that you can actually you know, go uh, not necessarily toe to toe with.
But you can you can pick up the pace a little bit.
Um, how how do you, how do you manage obviously not telling us exactly what you’re doing for your training? But how do you manage sparring? Do you guys do like a lot of technical sparring or they’re, just like regular, just you know, put some 16s on and just go to work, or how do you manage sparring with with the big guys normally yeah? Normally, it’s just regular slime.
I normally wear 18 ounce gloves, but even inspiring unintentionally, but i’ve still been knocking people out, which makes it more difficult to get sparring.
Yeah yeah yeah, i’m not as i’m six foot six for eight i’m 19 stone, yeah, um and and you’ve seen the way i could move and you’ve seen a fraction of of how i can punch so it it makes it difficult because i’m so awkward it makes It difficult it’s not just a matter of being awkward because i’m awkward and i can punch it, makes it difficult to try and get like much competitive inspiring unless it’s at that.
That kind of um that level pushing on where, where the lads are competing.
For more experience, exactly exactly who’s who’s been the best uh sparring opponent.
You’Ve had to date so far, um.
Personally, it’s probably pushed me the hardest.
Physically i’d, probably say third chazo, oh wow, i could have oh yeah i was about.
I was going to guess.
You were going to say dylan white, but chazor.
I can imagine jazora’s.
Sorry chazor, probably spars the way he fights he’s just coming in exactly that.
I remember because when he was firing as well, i remember they when i got there, they, like i had a pair of 18 ounce girls with me.
Um their pair were winning 18 articles.
You know winning the brand – yes, yes, yes, they’re well padded and the rest of it yeah yeah and they were fairly new, but at the time they said no you’re, not sparring in them.
Uh.
You wear the gloves that we give you so they gave me these pair of 20 ounce everlast gloves where all the padding was on the knuckle with this means in these um fly gloves, but i’m pretty they’re not 20 hours.
I don’t know what else they were, but they weren’t 20.
um.
They were probably about 18’s or 16s or something but regardless of that, he he he comes at you, 100.
No he’s um.
You don’t really put his point, which isn’t and he can so.
He knows those little tricks and um little stuff, yeah.
That’S down your foot, [ Music ]! That kind of stuff he’s uh he’s very but in terms of mentally i’d still say.
Probably, although he doesn’t, he doesn’t always look that kind of way in his fights.
I wouldn’t say, but inspiring is unbelievable.
He is one of the best lads i’ve i’ve gotten there with technically, and i learned so much from him.
I think he’s kind of coming coming uh coming through properly now, but yeah he’s uh.
Definitely one of the best uh.
I was in this bag, we have another question just came in, they want to know where the magic came from uh in your nickname man, the the alias well one of my friends uh.
He he’s a break dancer and he goes by the name of magic.
Okay and um, i remember what’s record when we was uh before i turned pro my um, my coach, i i don’t even know where, where he came up with the idea from for that name, he just kind of came up with it um and then obviously i I messaged my friend asked him.
You know, i know that’s your kind of thing, but he’s alright.
If i use the name as well, because because i was going to go with marvellous because no one knows that’s intact, okay, but i think at the minute i don’t want to disrespect that name and not do any justice.
So if i was gon na take that name, i would wait until i was uh something in the sport before i took that name but yeah.
I i i it was too it’s too early on for me to to take on that kind of name right right, but um yeah, so just write my magic and it’s stuck and [ Music, ], yeah um.
Also another question: we have come in um, best atmosphere in your opinion, york hall or newcastle.
Your call is very intimate, yeah um, i i did enjoy boxing there, but the people up in newcastle were amazing.
So so it’s so it’s intimacy for the environment or or or just the better fans really right in in newcastle yeah.
The atmosphere is much crazier yeah exactly and it’s obviously my first time boxing in an arena, so that will always keep a place a place.
In my heart – and i think i’m boxing back up in newcastle in july, i think which i’m looking for, how many more times do you plan on fighting this year? Do you think another four or five times really it’s like yeah? I want to be as active as possible: okay, okay, so you want to be.
You want to be like eight to town, eight to ten round level, uh fights by like early next year, so yeah, you know well, all of them.
I’Ll probably be i’ll.
Probably have my next, i think my next one’s a full round after that we’re going up to sixes um and we’re gon na.
Stick it six years, probably get about five, five uh or six sixes out and then move up to eight there.
We go so some more some more time to bang people around and knock about exactly.
That’S awesome, so um any um any any new and exciting news.
They want to drop to us um, i i don’t really know not really [ Laughter ].
The only thing is that i’m looking forward to going to america and i’ll be on there on the lookout for fire partners over there.
Gon na have to start um, making some connections or and whatnot i didn’t go outside, i didn’t send you did i send you, i sent you tim witherspoon’s information.
Make sure you contact him.
When you hit america uh yeah he’s he’s philadelphia, isn’t he basically yeah? He is yeah yeah.
He should be able to help you out finding some sparring, burners and stuff yeah i’ll um i’ll i’ll, okay i’ll probably have to i’ll give him a call when i’m over there yeah i’ll message him before i go and then um but yeah.
Thank you.
I really appreciate that and um yeah, as i said, um well, i’m kind of just it’s one of them things where i it’s been on my mind, going over to america for a long while to to box yeah um – and i wouldn’t have forgiven myself.
If i, if i didn’t, do it so yeah, it’s uh well, you’re getting intense you’ll, get tons of experience, yeah exactly and um all the best powerful fighters in the world come out of america, so they they’ve got a certain style and a certain way of doing Things over there that i want to be able to learn and kind of kind of take home with me in fact make sure make sure carl hears that say it again.
We have another question: they want to know.
Uh promotional deals currently how’s that going for you yeah um, i’m i’m signed with.
What’S a minute at the minute yep.
I don’t remember this um, the sound of the music.
I got a deal with chad um, so it’s all going good, um yeah.
It’S a deal which they’ve got deals with channel five sky sports uh channel.
Five is amazing for learning for kind of building your base, uh it’s right, free-to-air tv and they do like one and a half million viewers.
A show see that’s great, so that’s great! So you’re getting you’re getting that exposure that that these you know the young fighters need nowadays how’s the social media.
I see you’re starting to finally pick up on your social media.
You’Re, dropping you’re dropping a little bit more videos here and there and and then showing people what you’re doing man um.
Do you find it’s helping with uh with your fan base hitting up the social media yeah? Well, i’ve never been good with social media.
I i’ve always been not lazy with it, but i’m kind of clueless with it.
So i don’t really know what i’m doing i’ve had people offer to run it.
For me, someone runs my facebook page for me um, so i i don’t really have anything to do with that side of stuff, but i’ve got um.
My instagram is me, which is probably why it’s so bad yeah your you guys, you guys, as if you’re a professional athlete these days, you need to be on your social media just to get your name out there more right.
That’S one of the reasons why mike started this started.
This show uh every day at ford, is to help out market guys that aren’t getting the the you know the not that they’re not getting it, but just to give you help help quick start to getting your name out there.
That was one of the main reasons.
Why mike started this started knuckle up at four right, so you know that’s another reason why you want to try to get on your social media.
If you know try to get to a point where financially, you can just pay people, you know to take care of each of your accounts.
I’M trying to get the same, i’m trying to get to that same level.
Man, um, quick, creating questions.
They’Ve got people um watching them that do this kind of stuff for them, but yeah, i don’t know, i’m just i’ll get around to it when i get around to it behind it.
That’S good thinking, right there! That’S right! If you just keep knocking people out.
Eventually, people are just going to figure it out.
You know, look got over, i think on all social media, instagram, twitter and facebook got over a quarter million views boys.
I wouldn’t i wasn’t tagged in any of it.
I know like on facebook.
I think it yeah on sky sports.
It got over 100.
The last time i checked anyway, it was over 160 000 views.
Nobody tagged you, they didn’t tag you in any of them nope.
I was absolutely gutted because it was my knockout and i i can’t get tagged in my own knockout [ Laughter, ] yeah, at least thank the person for the video um training question for you like.
Sometimes it’s it’s it’s hard to get boxers to get to do.
That road work get that cardio up, especially big guys how how um, how do you or do you like, obviously like how do you get your work in like do you do more skipping, more swimming or more running? How do you, how do you? How do you do your cardio? We yeah kind of um mix up, keep them um.
Do a lot of uh cycling um.
We have general just uh a lot of circuitry.
That makes sense.
The cycling makes sense because it’s less less strain on your on your on your knees and ankles, for you big guys, so that that does make sense.
The cycling yeah yeah exactly, but we do do sprints um because it’s short in intense and it’s at work.
You still work on my legs: it’s not as easy and stuff it’s not as taxing on my knees and back and that kind of stuff as um try and keep it short, but effective uh when it comes down to flower running um do a lot of walking.
Anyway, um, let’s say i, i try and put as much through my legs as possible without having to to put as much but we’re doing the least amount of strain possible.
Quick, quick suggestion.
If you get, if you get a chance, do a lot of like and running routines in the pool it doesn’t, even if you can just get well you’re a tall guy, so you’re gon na get closer to the closer to the deep end.
If you can get the water to like, where it’s almost like at your chest level and do running like sprints from there, that’s a lot softer on your knees and your ankles and you can still and because the resistance from the water, it’s like it’s like uh.
It’S like weights, because your because your legs, your muscles, have to move harder to push the water to go through.
So try that out.
Okay man, if you used to find a pool like that i’d be drowning in that [.
__ ] [ Laughter ], where about um did you say your base not far from the croc gym, not far from i’m in canada, i’m in windsor, canada right by the michigan border, like i can walk to the border from from where i am right now, from My house and crunk gym is about five minutes from the border, so yeah yeah yeah.
I bring my boxes over there all the time.
Do you have many uh heavyweights in your area, not right now, uh um.
I do have a couple not on your level but we’ll well.
What we’ll do is like we put, you can stay in there, we’ll put like one minute.
Each so you’ll be getting work, you’ll be getting work, the whole time.
Don’T worry i’ll, take care of you.
I don’t have i’ll, have heavy weights come in from from out of town when you’re here, don’t worry i’ll i’ll make sure to take care of you there you go.
We already set it up.
Okay, when i come over, i was gon na say.
Send me your number after this i was just about to say, uh mike i got ta get going right now, but we’re just about to we’re just about to end the show anyway, man, okay, so uh, yeah, maddie, um.
Honestly can’t wait to see you fight uh guys.
You heard this here, man maddie harris getting back in the ring again doing what he does best coming up on the 17th of this month.
Uh this one’s good man echo echo arena liverpool, uh maddie.
Why don’t you tell everybody out there where they can hit you up on your social medias and stuff, so they can uh start following your career love the outro by the way, and it’s um, just real maddie harris uh across everything.
That’S uh my castle, social media, real, my house, that’s where you find me yeah all right to all the knuckle up fans thanks for tuning in to today’s episode of knuckle up with mike orton center friend and our special guest today, maddie harris be on the lookout For this 6-8 monster coming soon to you, if you haven’t yet hit that subscribe like and share, we’ll see you tomorrow same time same channel new prospect, you know what it is knuckle up.
