Hello boxing fans around the world welcome to another episode of knuckle up, featuring mike4 on talk and fight.
Today, being female friday, we’ve got a special, a super special guest lined up.
Why? Because our special guest is located not next to us not near us, but all the way down under she’s from new zealand she’s, a great great fighter that mike’s discovered and she’s live she’s waiting in the green room.
Why don’t you line it up mike knock him up fans? The time is here: we’re gon na talk with mia the night motu 7-0.
I believe four knockouts and now new zealand’s lightweight female champion yeah.
So, honestly, graham we’re gon na knock you out of here and bring her in man hi mia.
How are you doing i’m doing great? Thank you.
Thanks for taking up the you know the time to come on the show.
I know it’s really early in the morning where you’re at, i believe it’s around eight o’clock in the morning.
Yes, okay! Well, thank you for coming on honestly, i i stumbled upon you you’re a super busy fighter uh, there’s a lot of things going on in your life right now, um you have five children and you managed to this wonderful, professional boxing career uh.
You know, and and honestly you did this long-term amateur career and i want to start from the beginning and find out all about it.
So what age did you start boxing at? I started boxing at the age of 13 and that was doing amateur boxing, which was my mum got me into it, just to do it for fun and for fitness, mainly for when i was doing playing soccer, okay, um.
So what what got you uh? What got you interested to uh compete well like what are some of your influences to make you get in the ring, or do you just like getting into fights um? No, i didn’t like i actually didn’t like getting into fights.
I was just.
I just gave it a go and then i liked it and enjoyed it um the fitness was really good and then um when i was at the gym.
My coach cameron, todd at the time was, was like.
Well, why don’t you give it a go, and so i was like okay gave it a go and then first fight i was addicted.
He got bit by the bug right away, uh how many, how many amateur boats did you actually uh have in your amateur career? I had about over 50 fights 50 fights wow, that’s quite a bit and you’ve had time to have children.
So that’s that’s interesting.
You have five children.
What are their ages uh? I have my oldest, he is 13 and then i’ve got a 12 year old.
Seven-Year-Old.
A two-year-old at a one-year-old, oh wow, wow, wow, okay, so you’re you’re, definitely a busy mom um.
Do you find it hard to uh juggle both family and your pro career uh? No, not lately, not with my pro career, like my i’ve, got really good support.
Um.
My partner and my mom, my family and also my coach and my team, are also very supportive, so yeah we make it work.
We find ways, that’s good um, so your team, us you’re part of peach boxing um, your coaches, uh isaac, isaac, peach right so um.
How long, how long have you been with him since the beginning like since i’ve been with isaac uh from the beginning of pro boxing? Yes he’s the one that encouraged and pushed me to go pro and i’ve been with him since lockdown last year? Yes and honestly, you, you you’re, blown up headlines everywhere, really because you know you, you turn pro in october of 2020 and you you know, and you already have seven fights under your belt and you have.
You have literally a spike scheduled every month until june.
Yes, so so you’re ready to stay busy yeah, i i’m i’m pretty impressed with you know, with with the amount of fights that you’ve had in such a short amount of time.
Are you? Are you doing this because you’ve spent so long in the amateurs? And you don’t want to waste any more time, uh! No, i’m doing it because my coach was like nah.
He believes in me and we’re both kind of similar we’re both crazy.
Like yeah, let’s go well, you definitely definitely are taking on the world.
That’S for sure! You actually made history by winning winning um the i believe it’s c, a and b f title in 2019 as being the first woman to win it or something like that yeah.
So that’s that’s awesome, yeah! So that’s that’s what we’ve said that they said that you’ve made history by winning that title uh you’re ranked number one in your division and you’re actually ranked fourth pound for pound in the in uh in your country.
So you know you’ve.
You’Ve made a lot of a lot of headway in such a little time and uh.
I think you’re scaring uh scaring the competition, because no, no, no, the headlights are meaning.
What’S what’s next for mia, what’s next for what’s next, for you are you thinking? World stage is that is that, where is that, where you’re on your way to oh – yes, definitely so me and my coach, our goal is definitely world stage.
He’S always said to me from the time i started.
He said now we’re hitting the big thing we’re going.
We’Re going to be world champ he’s always said that to me.
So ever since my first fight he’s always said you want to be a world champ, so he’s children enough.
That’S good! Hey! If you believe in it, you can do it and obviously you are doing it and it’s showing by this wonderful win record that you’re you’re compiling here with a wonderful slew of knockouts, i must say which our fight fans i have put them on to you and I’Ve told them to go out and watch you and see all your fights, because you know you’re very entertaining to watch um.
What are some of the accomplishments uh short-term accomplishments like where do you see yourself and see the next year? Uh definitely overseas.
Definitely try.
Our goal is definitely to get some more belts under, but we’re just taking each month as it comes so yeah looking for opponents differently, so definitely should be on that world stage yeah hitting that world title definitely by next year.
Okay, that being said, where do you see yourself in five years? Oh yeah, i see myself in five years who should be holding the belt right in the middle holding the wall holding the hall in five years, undisputed in five years, great goals, great goals.
You know what you and your team can definitely accomplish, that you’ve proven that, without with with every time i see you out in the ring, you get better and better more exciting to watch every single time um.
Let’S run us through uh one of your training camps like what do your days? Look like start to finish, uh, you know what what do your training camps involve? I know you have kids so like is it hard? Is it hard with the training camps um? No, it’s not hard at the training camps because it’s good, like my coach and his wife, which she’s like my she’s, my conditioning, coach, um they’ve.
Both got kids as well, like they’ve got kids, so they understand.
So if i want to bring the kids, i can bring the kids to training camp or otherwise i leave them at home with my partner or my family.
So it’s really good.
It’S that we make it work.
We always find ways, there’s never any excuse.
So do the kid do the kids participate in boxing when they can as well? Do they do they come to the gym with you and throw myths uh? No, they they play with the they play with my coaches, kids, yeah and he’s got like two pigs and a dog.
So so they have lots of fun with a girl yeah.
They have loads of fun.
That’S real kid friendly! Now jim.
What um? What what do you think separates? Um separates you from any other woman in your division at the moment.
What separates me whoa, i just believe in myself, 100 and i’ve got the i’ve, got the right support and the right encouragement and so yeah.
I think that’s that’s! How i see myself and i’ve got a yeah and i’ve got.
I’Ve, got a awesome coach who always says just believe in yourself.
He always says that we we can take on the world.
Is there? Is there? Is there another coach or athlete in in your life that um you look up to another athlete? No, not that i can think of my favorite.
My favorite fighter will have to be tiffany canelo and terry harper, okay, yeah terry harper.
How do we know about her? We know about her and canelo.
Okay speaking of canelo, who is he gon na beat billy saunders? Oh definitely, yeah.
Definitely, definitely right.
What do you think it’s not going the distance right? No, not going the distance? No, i don’t.
I don’t think it’s going past.
The fifth yeah melissa is pretty strong.
Yes speaking of that um so world stage in a couple years, um.
What do you want to be? Do you want to be loved or feared in your career, loved, loved, okay? Okay? That being said, when you’re ready to hang it up and you’re done with the game and you’re ready to retire and just sit back and watch it from the sidelines, which is hard for fighters to do what do you want to be remembered for that? I’Ve encouraged other females to believe in themselves.
You know to get in that ring, it’s not easy getting in there.
So i want to be remembered.
I’Ve encouraged them not to be fair, not to fear, don’t duck and dive anywhere and just go and give it a go.
That’S a great legacy to leave by.
That is a great that would be a great legacy to leave behind um today to date, um what uh, what accomplishments are your? What is your greatest accomplishment today in in amateur or pro either? Oh, my greatest accomplishment would definitely have to be my title.
I just won yes, definitely yeah, that’s the whole.
The whole build up to it and the way i felt i was it was good.
I had the right support, the right team and man.
My coach was hard on me.
He was good though well.
He was hard on you for a reason and that’s the reason why you’re wearing that belt, though right? Yes, so so you’re you’re defending this belt again in may correct, may 8th yes against michaela jenkins.
Honestly, i don’t i i believe she doesn’t have.
She doesn’t have the the tools to stand in the ring with you is what i believe from what i’ve seen from her um.
I don’t know if you’re, if you’re worried about it uh.
How are you feeling about this fight uh, any any new tricks, we’re gon na see from you in the ring uh? Yes, you should definitely definitely see.
I find myself like.
I always um learn something new every time and i always present something new to each fight.
I’Ve had so yeah.
Definitely i already feel myself now like being in training in my training camp that yeah i’m definitely going to bring something different.
That’S awesome! I love it.
Man, exciting fighters is what we like.
Never leaving it in the judge’s hands is what we like and yeah you’re doing this you’re doing this um.
So are you so i noticed that you fight with, like you fight on a lot of p3 promotions.
Like is that who, who really backs you up? His p3 promotions? Is that who you work with for your fights uh? No, it’s mainly mainly my coach, which is peach boxing.
We normally, he normally hosts his own, shows okay and that’s yeah, and so it’s all done through him.
So awesome, it’s all in hell, okay, okay, it’s it’s! You know like being on the other side of the world.
You know.
Sometimes you get the right information.
Sometimes you get the wrong.
It’S just.
We’Ve got to correct it and find out right so yeah.
It’S definitely from peach boxing.
So beachboxing promotions, peace, boston management, peach boxing, the whole world.
Everything he works, his ass off.
He does.
He works so hard him and his wife.
So how long? How long has uh peach boxing been established? Has it been around for a very long time, yeah for a few years? Yes, i mean, oh, i couldn’t say sorry [ Laughter, ], yeah.
Quite a few.
Is it? Is it known for uh for, for, like you know, putting out big fighters and champions? Is that what it’s known for? Oh, okay, okay, so you’re? Just in that in that same long line of great fighters that are coming out of a great ship? That’S amazing: okay, okay, um, so uh in your amateur career um, you won, you won golden gloves and you won.
You were new zealand, champ 57 kilo.
Um was it.
How did you feel in those situations? Was it uh? Was it hard to hard to compete at that level, you know being being an amateur and still raising your family? Did you find it hard to do that at that at that time, i know you have a great support in your house.
Yes, yes, i did find it hard, it was.
It was actually quite hard back then like it was very tiring, very tiring and stressful and didn’t really have much of the support.
Back then, like i did, have support, and but it’s not as good as it is now like it’s very stable i’ve got.
I’Ve got amazing support now and it’s really good to have also like my coach and his wife and our gym.
It just we’re all such a family, so we’re all very encouraging and we we’re a tight unit and we pushed each other.
So it’s good.
I’Ve got yeah it’s way better now than it was back, then it was very stressful back then.
I didn’t really like it like.
I liked it because of the sport, but at the same time i didn’t like it very unhappy yeah.
Now, i’m loving it now.
You’Re loving it now you get all the support you want you get in the gym.
You get to do what you want.
That’S that’s amazing.
Do you? Okay, do you remember your first, your first pro fight and the experience like like how you were feeling and what you experienced? Oh, i can’t forget it.
Let’S, let’s hear how were the nerves were the nerves, real bad? Where were you like really nervous? No, i didn’t have any nerves, nothing wow.
I was just excited and i was happy.
I was actually really happy and i couldn’t believe i was there like.
I couldn’t believe i was walking in to a ring and i was turning pro and i was i just remember walking out and i looked it and i’m watching my coach walking in front of me and i’m like he’s bloody crazy.
I can’t believe you’ve got me doing this, but i just remember walking.
I was like okay far.
Let’S do this like, and i thought it was going to be completely different, but oh my gosh, it was so me it was.
It was totally you you fit right in, as i threw the first punches.
I was like oh my gosh and then like i was like oh my gosh.
Is she hitting me? I was like i love getting hurt.
Do you? Do you still get that same excitement when you step into the ring now like yeah every time? Every time you get that enthusiasm, you’re, just you’re ready to get in there and just trade gloves yeah, i’m just like yeah.
Let’S go, let’s go have.
This is what i’m good at.
What’S up what what’s your greatest punch, what do you like to finish it with? Oh, my favorite puncher, my greatest punch? Is a body shot all the time yeah you love it eh, you love! It dig deep and just get right in there.
Yeah hit them in turtles, make them cringe and drop to the knee yeah.
I love the body shots.
You know what it’s it’s such a great tool in boxing that you know a lot of a lot of young people need to learn in the game.
That body shot is so crucial, man and yeah.
It is it’s so crucial to to to your game plan.
You know you beat that body, then they can’t hold their hands up anymore and opens that head right up for those knockout shots it does.
But when you do, when you do get that awesome power, like you have you can finish them with those nasty body shots.
So yeah that’s either, which is great.
It’S such a great tool.
I love that you use it.
I love watching, you use it and honestly a lot of female boxers just start.
You know, following in your footsteps and really go to the grind of that body.
Like you do yeah yeah, i thought i was that strong, like.
I didn’t believe that i had power.
Do you do a lot of? Do you? Do a lot of strength and conditioning like exercises? Yeah definitely yeah, but i never thought i was that strongly.
I never thought i was a heavy puncher.
I never thought i could throw a punch because i just always thought i was a pity petter until my coach was like no, let’s change.
You were born to punch.
Do you do any uh? Do you do any extracurricular activities outside of boxing right now, like any other like hobbies, you have sports anything um.
I love playing like tag and stuff, but most, but i don’t really have time for that.
I mainly have time like the only time is.
I focus on is just spending time with family, the kids and like my partner, and all that trying just i just managed to fit in time for them.
Jeff.
Yes, definitely because you do have a fight coming up in a couple of weeks, which i can’t wait to see you’re gon na title defense, i i believe you’re gon na win this one uh, i’m behind you 100.
Definitely thank you.
I definitely want to get you back on here after that that win and get you back on it.
Then you can hold that belt up real nice and be like yeah um.
Do you uh like when you’re, when you’re in serious training um like do you follow like serious eating plans like nutritions like do you? Do you have any eating regimen that you want that you follow, or just no like um, just eating, like mainly lots of fruit and vegetables, and i’m not really a big meat eater, but no, i don’t really have an eating plan at the moment.
I’M sorry! I’M staying healthy, that’s the main thing getting all the right nutritionists in me.
So that’s the main thing.
If you can fight anybody anybody today, that’s that’s in your weight class in the world right now, who would it be? Definitely someone from this country, new zealand, okay and there’s i’ve already named them.
There’S three i’ve already named, and that would be definitely baby, nansen, troy, garten and karen.
I forgot her last name.
You know what definitely want to fight m3 before you know, because before you before, you make the job.
So once you fight, then once you fight them, that’s it and then you can move make the move over.
You just want to prove you want to prove to them: okay, okay, um, so i read this.
I read this headline that said that your oldest son was the one that kind of kind of pushed you into like turning pro and doing this um.
I explained i i don’t even know yeah.
He didn’t encourage me, but the main encouragement was from my coach because he’s the one that reached out to me and was like you know, let’s go pray and he always believed he always said to me that i’d be good, but then my son.
So my one of my fights i had i kind of felt i got.
I was quite sick and then my son, he was like ma.
He always says to me mum, you can you can do anything if you win or lose.
I still you’re still the best to me like to him, so i was like okay.
If my son can say that about me, then i don’t care about anyone else.
You know, as long as i can make him proud and my children proud, then that’s the best feeling ever that feel that’s better than holding up a belt.
To be honest, okay, um your worst, your worst performance so far, which really you don’t really have one, because you’ve won all your fights but describe your worst performance in in your mind, what your worst performance was and what you’ve done since then to to make sure That you better yourself, my worst performance, would have been the beginning of the year.
My first fight back.
Definitely that was the one that was my worst performance and reason why um i was unfit simple.
Was that it’s easy? I wasn’t.
I was training and i was fit, but i wasn’t fit to how i normally at you weren’t fighting yep yeah.
I wasn’t fight ready, so so busted my ass and did it that’s the hurt and driving yeah and we learned i learned from it and the good thing is i learned from it and i’m never gon na go back there.
Never just stay fight ready.
All the time yeah stay fight ready.
All the time do you know, do you know who you have do you have anybody in mind for june? Like do you know, you want to line up for june’s fight? I know we’re talking like two months ahead, but who do you know you want to fight by then yep? Definitely any one of those three.
I just called any one of those three okay, yeah, so fans out there watching you heard it.
She wants to fight any one of those three in june, so you’ve got you’ve called them out.
Hopefully we get to see it.
I know you’re gon na fight, one of them which one which one do you want, which one do you want the most, oh, which one would i want the most? Oh, oh, i don’t know because they all are the same fool, probably have to say baby nansen.
Okay, yes, she’s also she’s, also an active kickboxer too right yeah.
She is yes, she’s got she’s, actually has um 40 professional fights under her belt, but yeah she’s only.
I believe she’s only what six and six and three or something like that: six three and one in boxing yeah okay, so i feel she’s the most experienced one.
Definitely she definitely she has the most ring experience ring time, but not necessarily the most boxing experience right.
Like she, she does have boxing experience, but yet again she does other martial arts but you’re the true boxer at heart, you’re, the true you’re you’re, the true new zealand champ at the moment uh.
I can’t wait to see you fight again in may going to be great.
That being said, i don’t want to keep you too much longer mia.
I know that you have such a busy life.
You got the kids, you just got some time for the kids.
You got ta, you got, ta, go and have family time before the next fight may so i’m not gon na.
Keep you too much longer.
I want to thank you again for coming on.
Definitely thank you everybody.
Yes, yes, i can’t wait.
I honestly we do it.
