Hello boxing fans welcome to another episode of talking fight, featuring christian from the friday night panel, where we talk the olympics in particular.
Hopefully something about boxing has come up today, worthy of discussion.
What have you found out christian? Well, i mean there’s always something to talk about with respect to boxing and we will talk about that.
That’S not always directly or olympic related with respects to the olympics.
We heard today from the japanese vaccine minister uh weighing in on his thoughts on the upcoming olympic games.
So, as we know, japan is working really closely with the international olympic committee to prepare for the games.
This is despite concerns about coven 19 flaring in the region.
There are currently no plans to postpone said the minister in charge of vaccinations, mr tara o’connell.
He was quoted as saying unless they decide, otherwise we simply need to prepare for the games and how to control the situation.
I think uh it changes every day.
So we will need to be prepared for that, but i don’t think that they’re thinking about postponing it now he added yes, the situation in osaka, which we talked about yesterday.
Uh, is especially worrying.
Uh kono was also.
I should mention the minister for regulatory reform.
So he’s kind of being hit double on this one uh a new vi.
He said that a new virus variant, similar to the one first discovered in the uk, was quickly spreading in the osaka region.
He added uh.
He said that we’ve identified a similar, similar mutation in tokyo, so we’re worried that tokyo may follow osaka within the next couple of weeks.
So we really need to be paying attention to that situation.
So osaka’s population is of course much smaller than tokyo’s, but the city reported 878 new cases on the 7th of april compared to just 555 in tokyo.
On the same day, japan is set to vaccinate the country’s senior citizens uh starting monday.
This upcoming monday, moving into the next stage of its uh vaccine rollout and which has so far been hampered, uh by delays and backed by uh delays of vaccine deliveries to the country.
So far, currently less than one percent of the population in japan has been vaccinated.
According to kono, but he is hopeful that inoculations will move into full swing by mid-may when vaccinations from the european union arrive.
Conor waited on this saying that, unfortunately, we have not been able to develop a vaccine domestically and we need to rely on the import of the vaccine coming from the eu right now we have authorized the pfizer vaccine and it’s going to start being rolled out to Senior citizens, starting on monday.
He also stressed that the vaccine being developed by the university of oxford and astrazeneca, is going to be especially important because that’s also going to be manufactured in japan, which would help cut out some of those negotiations and help speed up their uh rollout.
So uh in you know, as far as the olympics goes they are, they are experiencing or they’re ex, expecting an uptick in covet 19 cases in the tokyo area between now and the olympics uh.
But you know fingers crossed that.
The vaccine rolled out now that it has finally begun in the country is going to run smoother than we’ve seen in some other areas around the world and hopefully that this is kind of a non-starter.
By the time we get through.
To uh july fingers crossed as always and we’ll keep you guys updated on that as things roll around um moving back more specifically into the world of boxing, though a couple of weeks ago, and i think i’m not sure if we dealt with this at the time.
But a couple of weeks ago the aida asian forum took place and that’s where 32 countries participated virtually during the forum uh and the aiba leadership, as well as national federations from the continent, discussed a number of crucial issues, including uh, the new aiba constitution, the new Committees, uh and reforms uh, as well as the event calendar development plan for the continent and communication strategy.
Moreover, they also got a new report from the legal group and were presented with the new anti-doping workshop.
So that’s something to look forward to aiba.
President umar kremlov said, uh leaders of the asian national federate federations agreed to a unified approach to the organization of competitions, training, communication, legal and anti-doping issues.
Asian countries have shown a unity in support of the reforms in the international boxing association is carrying out, and i am grateful to my colleagues for their productive work.
Pardon me, the asbc president, mr anis al otaiba delivered a report about the upcoming asian elite men and women’s boxing championships for 2021.
.
Now those are gon na be hosted in new delhi and running from between the 21st of may to through the 31st of may, and he was quoted saying the asian elite.
Men and women’s boxing championships will be the first tournament in asia to be held in 2021.
In view of the current global situation, championships have become even more important and it is an event to evaluate the readiness of asian boxers for the olympics, the champions.
Sorry, the championships will provide the highest competitive atmosphere and platform for upcoming boxers and will be conducted in accordance with all safety measures.
You know fingers crossed like everything else here.
Uh the championships uh er were of course earlier scheduled to take place in 2020 and, like everything else were postponed to 2021.
Due to the pandemic.
The 2019 edition of the asian amateur boxing championships had set a new record with 304 uh boxers participating from 34 countries.
Uh, the 2021 edition is expected to raise that number, so we’ll be expecting a great tournament.
That’S gon na be going on right around the same time as the qualifier for the americas is going on in buenos aires.
So once we start moving into may um we’re gon na have some big tournaments coming up and then obviously on the heels of that buenos aires tournament.
We’Re gon na see paris in the beginning of june or mid-june sorry, paris from mid-june to finish off that postponed european qualifier, so everyone’s kind of taken april off it seems everyone’s everyone’s sitting in training camps.
There’S not a lot of competition happening.
A lot of training camps a lot of sparring, but we are going to start moving into some uh.
Some world-class competitions coming up very very shortly.
All right is that it yep tickle tickle, but that was also just the tickle of the throat there right.
I was gon na start coughing at you all right, fair enough.
Don’T worry, tested no covert, no covers good.
That’S some upcoming upcoming tournaments and you know they’re.
The japanese are still working their way uh towards the olympics as best they can, and everyone still seems committed at this point.
So yeah seems all we can do is sit back and wait yep.
Absolutely.
I guess that torture relay is still going forward.
Then, even though it kind of bypassed osaka, i’m guessing well, it’s it’s currently in the osaka region and in osaka prefecture, not osaka city.
It’S been completely.
The torch relay has been completely removed from osaka city uh, the at least going through public streets, and i think we mentioned just yesterday – it’s now being uh held at the expo 70 commemorative park in sweden.
I believe s-u-i-t-a, i think, is how it was spelt and that’s going to be happening through the 13th and 14th of uh of this month and then it’ll move on out of osaka and we’ll see uh how the different of the various prefectures around japan are prepared.
For the torch relay, as it makes its way to them, and hopefully we’re not seeing any upticks like we are on osaka and they are at least able to go through the streets like normal, even if they don’t have the same festive attitudes and parades and everything Else around it that we normally would see for an olympic relay.
At least boxing is a controlled event.
Where you have it inside, shall we say an arena but take, for example, the marathons i mean they’re gon na be running up and down the streets.
Uh come july.
Well i mean, and that is that is one of the that is you – you hit the nail on the head here and uh.
They will not be running around the streets of tokyo.
They actually mentioned this one.
I think last week as well.
Uh, the marathon has been moved from tokyo to.
I think it’s up in hokkaido now on the northern island of japan, 500 kilometers away from the olympic stadium, oh yeah, so they’ve already so large outdoor events, where you do need a little bit more space involved things such as large cycling, events or marathon events.
They are, they are taking those away from the urban areas where normally you’re right.
You would see road closures, and these guys would be going right through the middle of town.
With you know, crowds on either side of the road cheering on the local favorites and things like that, but uh yeah in the scaled back games.
I guess they want to take the temptation away from people uh.
You know to go out and do that so they’re uh they’re moving some of these large events further from the tokyo area.
Well, all countries are getting prepared.
Obviously, and boxing teams are winding up their activities, uh locally and preparing to move into larger tournaments on the global level seems to me.
Oh, i know the filipinos are gearing up as well as the indians for this uh new delhi uh tournament in may.
There’S a few teams that are uh they’re looking to use becks are: are you know, they’re getting ready as well? You know you got to remember in rio in 2016, uzbekistan topped the podiums for boxing.
So fair enough.
You know we can expect big things out of them for uh, for this uh for this tournament as well, in new delhi, and it’s gon na be a big precursor to what we’re going to be seeing in the games like you should be looking for names uh For some of these fighters that we’re seeing from the other side of the world – and these are people you can expect to see in the you know – quarterfinal semi-final action in the games themselves – excellent! Well thanks very much for the update, appreciate it and uh.
Tomorrow being friday, i guess we’ll see you twice uh once during the lunchtime olympic update and tomorrow night on the friday night panel.
That sounds about right, excellent thanks again and thank you good viewership, and if you like, like share subscribe, talk to you tomorrow,
There are no reviews yet.
