Wba champion the former wpf, all africa lightweight champion [ Music ] good afternoon, guys welcome to ringside talk once again with your host david ritchie.
Today i’ve got a special guest with me in studio.
I’Ve got mr dennis dougherty um, who holds a record of 25 to five losses in zero draws he’s from greece, switzerland, we’re gon na find out more about mr doughty, a very, very, very exciting, uh light uh welterweight fighter, um yeah.
So, let’s find out more dennis, how are you my brother, hey guys? What’S up what’s up how’s everything going i’m doing good, i’m doing good! Everything is going fine, bro how you doing i’m doing good bro a little bit sick but uh just taking it easy! A little bit i’ll be back in the gym on friday.
For those that don’t know, i’m me and dennis we train under the same coach, dominique younger.
So this is where i met dennis and yeah dennis is an exciting, exciting.
Super super lightweight super welterweight super welterweight contender 25.
As i said five losses so yeah dennis um.
You want to tell us more about yourself, brother, where you come from, where you were born.
A little bit of who you are bro, yeah, so um.
First of all, i was um.
I was born in switzerland in zurich, so i grew up also over there and my heritage is actually greek and albanian.
So my mother, my mother, she’s greek and my dad is albanian, so um yeah.
So actually i have to have the fighting spirit in my blood um.
So when i grew up like that, so i began like at the age of 13.
I began with the combat sports and um start fighting at the early age and yeah, and now i’m here and uh is this.
Where you, you found your love for boxing at the age of 13 or when you say, come back sports.
Do you speak about all type of karate, kaito or yeah yeah? I was.
I was actually beginning far before you know, with the combat sports but um, i always loved the competition.
I always loved the combat uh.
You know like man to man manual amano.
You know going so um yeah afterwards.
I fell in love with it.
You know like with with combat sports and boxing especially you know.
So that’s my thing: yeah, nice, bro and uh hearing you speak like this.
I’M sure you would have a nice little amateur record behind you with the boxing order.
Yeah i was um actually um.
I was um also fighting before boxing like 12 or something i did some thai boxing also competition.
I also became national champion over there.
You know, and then i became like a amateur boxer um.
I did around 60 70 amateur bouts yeah, so i was fighting.
I was fighting at the age of 18 um.
I went to the pros so lovely, bro and uh.
Your pro career tell us about that.
Bro uh, you say you turned pro when you were 18.
Where was this in switzerland um, because i know you’re also one of those fighters that have been abroad to america and all over give us a little bit of a rundown there on your pro career.
Yeah, of course i mean um.
I’Ve started doing pro actually training in switzerland, so um.
My my previous trainer was also a german guy and um.
I was training about like five years over there in switzerland, also in zurich um.
I had about 13 pro fights over there.
Yes, so after that i went actually to the states.
I went to the states, and i fought also under golden boy promotions – did some fights over there.
I was training with with robert garcia, marco contreras, and actually the i mean he was the coach of fernando vargas.
He was coach of um brian viloria, marcus madonna, and i was training with with all the top yeah top contenders, actually with lomachenko right now champion.
Um godzilla cavaliers usyk, i went over there and i was training for about one and a half years over there.
Well, nice bro, i just wan na stop you there bro uh! That sounds amazing.
Even i hear you saying some big names there that you trained amongst.
Would you tell us how that that was uh? You know, i don’t think.
I think you one of the big names i trained with uh.
You know i you know, i haven’t really had the opportunity to train with such big names.
Legends like that, while i train side by side with you, how was that you know training with such big names moving from switzerland coming into the states, and you find yourself under you know, training with with these guys coached with these guys.
How was that, for you, man um, it was a.
It was an experience um that speaks for itself, so it’s like um, i mean first of all you have to you have to imagine that before you were just watching the youtube videos and all that kind of stuff you see like ellie segback, the reporter and whatever He’S reporting like over there at this gym the the popular guys, the world champions and everything, and then one day, i’m by myself over there.
So the thing over there is, you have to prove yourself so and the very first day i went over there.
I had to prove myself in sporting like right away, so you you have to go in with the sharks and you are becoming a shark by yourself.
So so that’s that’s actually the um.
How can i say it’s? It’S like that’s how it is.
You know, that’s how it works.
So i had to.
I had to get my respect over there.
Um yeah and i also achieved it.
So i had my respect and everything and and then you would you were like in this group – you know with all these guys and then you’re training with them side by side.
You know so yeah.
It’S i mean it’s, it’s a different.
It’S a different world.
Let’S say like this different world, but um you know i’m you know for me.
It’S like.
I am in this world.
You know i belong world a lot.
I belong to this.
To this top-notch guys.
You know yes, yeah, nice, bro and uh.
Would you uh ever consider going back there or you would say that now being there experienced all of this, you know you, you you’ve taken what you needed to take from that journey and you’re happy with your journey.
Now.
What would you say about that brother? It’S! It’S actually it’s actually a good question, but um for right now, i’m sad so right, not satisfied.
I’M happy.
Let’S say like this, because you can never be satisfied in this in this sport.
You know um, because if you are satisfied you you’re not growing.
You know because there’s no space to grow there, you go yeah, so i’m saying right now, maybe one day who knows maybe one day but for right now, i’m good! You know right right now: i’m good i’m winning my fights and um the top and uh yeah nice bro.
How many fights did you uh encounter? While you were on your journey in the united states? Did you have any fights out there? Yeah fought thought twice.
I thought twice: i fought in new york, verona new york and i fought also in palm springs um in india, in india, yeah and what is the difference? Uh.
You know i’ve only fought really in in africa and in slovenia.
I would say in the european boxing there is a bit of a difference compared to the to the african boxing scene.
Was there a difference in terms of a let’s say, production line uh the way they do things um to what you have here in germany or under swiss promotion? Is it anything different or you would say that? Actually it’s in the same barrier? No there’s there is a difference.
Definitely there is a difference and um i mean you have to you have to think about that, because the mark is over there such big.
You know, there’s like it’s like so popular over there, so they they have.
They have more more tools, you know to to get the sport bigger and bigger, and also do the shows better and better.
So i mean – and let’s let’s talk about golden boy, you know like these guys over there.
You know i mean it’s one of the biggest promotion you know in the in the world, you know so they have the tools and also they are they’re able to do.
These big shows you know there is.
There is definitely a big difference.
Yeah, okay, nice bro, nice, yeah man, it sounds very exciting, it’s very exciting and uh.
I know that uh you’ve been uh, quite a busy busy fighter uh, even during the pandemic that we had.
I think you find your way back into the.
There was a bit of a quiet break and then you found your way back into the fight scene.
Um tell us how that has been uh, especially with the pandemic that hit us.
You know and then finding your way back and i see now you you’re quite a busy fighter and that’s quite exciting, as you find it to be as busy as you are yeah i mean i’m, i’m happy, i’m happy and also um yeah, i’m lucky and i’m Happy that i’m right now like busy like that you know, like i fought one one month before right now, i’m fighting back again on friday on this friday.
You know in the pandemic, it was.
It was quite hard.
It was quite quite like frustrating.
You know it was frustrating because you didn’t know when your next fight is going to happen.
You know you don’t know you don’t know what kind of schedule do you have.
You know what about the preparation so that over there it was like you have to train.
You know to sustain your your your fitness, you know also to to to stay in the you know, sustained shape.
You know also to sparring and all that kind of stuff.
Also mentally physically, you know to be just yeah to be just um ready.
You know ready to go, you know ready to go yeah, so it was.
It was quite it was quite frustrating but um, but you know not not only myself had to go through these hard times.
You know it was the whole world you know.
So i was not the only one so but right now, i remember better.
You know yeah.
I remember we were in the gym, we would see you sometimes come in and out.
You know we would always talk about.
We don’t know what’s happening next.
When is our next fight? I mean yeah, that’s it, it is, it is what it is, but uh.
We can’t we can’t change, we can’t change the the situation or, let’s say like before.
We couldn’t change this situation, but right now we’re doing the best and uh just keep fighting right.
That’S true! That’S true! Bro and now i was just about to say what i saw in you – was also the not giving up spirit you know, even throughout corona and stuff, where you say we didn’t know what was happening, but there’s one thing you were always in the gym, always working Always keeping the fight spirits up, you know uh, which is good.
You know some fighters, we they have that some fighters, just don’t you know a few people.
I know a lot of people that, during the pandemic actually gave up on their careers, went on to do other things.
Because of this you know and uh.
You know it’s very good to know that you got this fighting spirit in you, so bro your your fights.
Now uh, let’s talk about what’s happening in in your life at the moment, uh you happily married.
That’S uh! Yeah! A year ago i think yeah yeah like right now, already one and a half year, one and a half years yeah.
You know that’s very good.
That’S really gon na wish you many more years and uh yeah.
You were saying you you back in the ring.
You tell us about your last fight and uh.
I know you’re fighting this weekend on friday against the best week, tell us a little bit about him.
What you’re expecting in this fight brother um for this for this fight? You mean no! No! I, like your fight before my favorite part, dad coming back, and then we will go into the next five years, yeah.
Actually, my fight, my fight before my fight before was uh was also in switzerland.
Yes, um, where i grew up actually also in zurich, because also my my management is from over there from from okay, so um yeah.
I actually, i felt good after like one year.
I think it was like one year break.
You know from the you know, from fighting like in the ring having a fight so um, i felt good.
I did my work.
I had my game plan so and also like um also, you know felt good.
I felt good and i was in shape, so so i get the victory the w so right now, yeah and now your next fight do you know anything about this uh pressing off that you’ll be fighting uh? Actually, not not that much, not that much but um.
I think it’s gon na be a good fight.
It’S gon na be a good fight and another man down, i say so, for the viewers that are watching uh dennis is fighting this friday.
It is friday it is friday, dennis uh in switzerland, in switzerland, on swiss uh swiss boxing promotions.
Yes, uh what you doing six to eight rounds, bro uh, it’s scheduled for six rounds for six rounds.
Okay, i guess uh, i think six rounds.
What’S your fight prediction on this because all the distance victory victory victory.
That’S a nice one! Brother! That’S amazing! That’S that’s! Uh! That’S all yeah victory! Nice man and uh brought us through your training how’s.
Your training been coming up to because you just fought four weeks ago how for the viewers back at home, if they don’t understand how these trainings happen, how would you break down your training coming out of a fight uh going straight into training camp for another fight? In a short term of four weeks, let’s let’s say, like my my whole life, my my whole like career, i’m in training camp, you know like so, basically, basically, it’s nothing new.
You know i went from from this from this fight to the next one and um yeah, just to you know, say like after after the fight i made some, i made some some days rest.
You know i rest someday so for about five days or something you know then i went i jumped and right away back.
You know so i started again like training twice a day doing my sparring, you know doing doing my running and stuff and doing some some um some strength, training and quite like that.
You know so and right now, i’m back! I’M back in.
You know back in ready to fight, you can go yeah yeah because you know because it’s of course, when you have like back-to-back fights, you know you have also to schedule.
You know it’s.
It’S it’s important to schedule the the times that you were fighting you know.
So let’s say you can’t make that that that long for a break you know, so you make a brave for about five days.
You know five days you rest for five days.
Then you have to jump in back again.
You have to champion again.
Do you think um as as an athlete you think uh you can carry do a lot of back-to-back fights or do you think it has a toll? It takes its toll on the body such fights like that, like if they have to say to you, you’ll, find six fights in the next six months.
Do you think that yeah able to do something or just start taking its toll yeah, i mean that’s what i say it’s it’s too much.
You know when you say like six six fights in six months.
You know it’s.
It is quite yeah, it is difficult.
You know because your body takes substance, you know it.
You know it’s too much substance that you have to give away.
You know because in this particular time, because you’re training twice a day, then you have your upcoming fight again, you know and then you go back again.
You know, and it’s like back to back you know, so your body also need to rest, and not only your body also your mind, you know your head.
Sometimes you know sometimes you think like.
Oh okay, it’s like you know, i’m obsessed, i’m obsessed with boxing.
They say like this: i’m obsessed, that’s what it is because um i can’t i can’t live without boxing.
It is what it is.
You know.
I’M obsessed, i love to watch boxing.
I love to to study.
I love to to train.
I love to fight.
You know especially to fight you know um, but you also need rest.
You do they say.
Rest is a big part of training as well.
It also takes patience to to say like a couple times, hey right now.
You have to rest because your body also needs rest, you know, and you have to listen to your body and that you have to learn.
You know step by step, you know, but you are quite busy brother.
You fought last month.
I know you fight now.
I think you’ve got that fight coming up in june yeah after these fights you’re going to need a long holiday brother brother.
I do man definitely definitely holiday when you, when you retire, when the clubs are [, Music, ], that’s long long time, long time.
So, first of all i have my we say.
Like my vitrine, you know full of full of my belts, you know so then we can talk again.
You know yeah, but right now for right.
Now, i’m hungry and [ Music ], i’m waiting for my shots.
You know: that’s nice, bro, that’s nice! I hear you say you’re hungry bro, with what we’re talking about with the training.
I know a lot of with the boxing with the viewers at home that are watching.
We do a lot of diets to get down into your weight and we have to weigh in at a certain weight uh.
How does this affect you now always um, going into a fight carbon loading of the way in fighting and then taking a rest coming back into training camp having to drop the weight? I’M not.
I don’t think it to be a lot.
I know you’re very disciplined boxer, yeah, you don’t go, we don’t blow up yeah, you don’t blow yourself up and stuff like this you’re, very disciplined you.
You know how to eat.
You’Ve been in the sport for a long time, but uh like now that it’s fight week and stuff, how does this play play in your training, your diet and all, even with fights coming in back to back, like you you? Having? Is there any in a fluctuation in your weight and stuff like this, and does it have an effect in your fighting or anything like this so um before that um before just to say, um, i was fighting in a light.
I was fighting in the light.
Uh lightweight, so i was fighting, so i was fighting super lightweight so and actually i’m um 8183.
You know, like my height, you know i’m one like 183, you know so and before it was like, you know it was quite difficult for me.
You know to make the weight and everything so i was always to the weight for about like 12 kilos.
15.
17.
You know 17 kilograms.
I did you know so, and it was and it was it was much you know, and then i i was fighting.
I was fighting for titles and stuff, you know so, and it was.
It was quite rough.
You know to to make that much weight and then also to get that weight back on you.
You know, because you can’t give away this 17 kilograms.
You know and gain it back again in one day you know in one day yeah.
So that’s not that’s not possible.
You know.
So i was weight ranked before you know so yeah that that’s actually what the reason was before you know, and then i was i was like saying by myself.
Also um.
I have to go up and then i was fighting.
I was fighting welterweight super welterweight.
You know and that’s super welterweight is 69.
8 kilograms and um i do it.
I mean i do it quite easily.
You know so i’m walking around 73 74 kilos.
You know yeah, so you only have to drop like five yeah.
I’M like i’m like good.
You know.
I’M like good, so that’s and i still have my power and i’m i’m i’m training.
Actually with my with with that weight that i will have on fight night, you know fight night fight weight, yeah exactly yeah.
So that’s for me quite good.
You know it is good and also i want to touch on that brother, but yeah.
I want to come back on to what you just said now very, very, very uh.
It’S a it’s a good subject, something good to speak on about training and fighting at your fighting, no training at your fight weight.
Some people say is not good.
You know me personally i this is what i love to.
Do i like to train at the at the way to fight that? I think it’s the best.
I think it’s got an advantage because you’re in the gym you’re going hard you’re going fast at that weight.
You just drop a few kilos.
You know, there’s boxes that come down 10 15 kilos, like you say, just to make weight and they try to carbon load uh 24 hours to put on weight to be the bigger heavier guy.
What’S your take on this, how the athletes go about their weight and you know, training at the weight or coming down eating thinking, i’m gon na be back at the strong weight.
You know five kilos, six kilos in one day.
What’S your take on this brother so um for me, so i can just talk for me personally.
You know so for me.
What i think it makes sense is when you’re training with when you’re training with your fight weight, your body is, is, you know, is used to it.
You know to train with that weight and also to fight with that weight.
You know, but when you, when you blow up like, like, i don’t know too much weight, you know your body, isn’t, you know, isn’t used to it.
You know he done he.
He doesn’t know how it you know how it affects you.
You know it because, first of all, if you have more mass, it takes more more oxygen.
So if you have more mass and you you you’re not used to it, you not to train with that mess, you know and you’re not used to it.
Then you, you are like sluggish luggage and uh.
Some people think some people think they they have to be heavier than i don’t know.
Let’S say like um.
Let’S say i don’t know like 10 kilos or whatever you know or six kilos.
You know, but it makes sense.
You know it makes sense to train with your with your fight weight.
You know like i really believe so.
Yes also, you know.
Let’S say it doesn’t have to be like, like the same same weight, but around you know around that weight.
You know, like 23 kilos up uh around there yeah difference you know so because, because you, your body is not used to it.
You know to have that much weight on you.
You know, of course, if you are, if you are trading with that weight, let’s say but but then you have to drop like i don’t know: 10 kilos.
You can put the 10 kilos again like like that quick or you just have to iv.
You know you put the iv that you you hydrate like that, but um for me.
I’M feeling good, i’m feeling strong, i’m feeling explosive um, [, Music, ], sharp um yeah.
That’S actually, what like? That’S actually what i’m feeling you know on fight night, of course, i’m trying to get back again on that on that weight.
You know to get, of course, to have also um that that power back again, you know, but it’s it’s it’s easy.
I mean it’s nice yeah.
I feel the same uh, that’s how i train that’s how i i’ll try to do things even if i must go to lightweight or something i try to drop only three three four kilos, because then i i’m fighting at my training weight.
Yeah so um just a question: uh, just a random question is after your weigh-in on friday.
What kind of food do you put inside of you dennis, as for dennis? How do you every fighter is different, how they cover load and all? What’S dennis’s secret tennis, the menace so um? The first thing is um.
The people think about the food, but the fluid is also important.
So so, first of all you have to drink.
You have to drink, you have to to rehydrate again, rehydrate and also um to drink, like um like glycogen to to to fill up your glycogen.
You know like your muscles, you know, with the carbohydrates and over there you can you you can rehydrate again better.
You know, and then you eat some right away after you’re after you weigh in you.
Have your shake.
You have your bananas.
You know um to get all that minerals back in you.
You know before you, you, you flush it out.
You know so you have to get your vitamins back again, also right away after after you weigh in you know.
Also your your fluid.
You know um water.
What i like to drink is like coconut water, coconut oil, yeah, coconut water is very good and then right right away, i will go to eat, so i will that thing what i will do, what what? What i’m doing all the time is like i’m eating stuff and i’m eating food that my my body is used to it.
You know okay, so you’re, not changing it up and then come way in.
They want special food yeah.
But why makes sense you know, because your body is used to it to that kind of stuff, and you can’t you can’t work it out.
You know even better.
You know your system is working it out.
You know yeah.
I used to do that.
Bro i used to eat, eat, eat and then get special food for the fight and then off the way in down in the toilet.
Oh yeah, that’s that’s! That’S what i’m saying and the people they have to eat something something special or whatever you know like i’m saying like the basics like being simple, is, is the best the best thing that you can do being simple.
You know being basic, we talk about rice, we talk about chicken, we talk about uh fish, we talk about veggies, you know broccoli and that kind of stuff.
You know that stuff that you’re used to it.
You know uh, because your system can work it out better.
You know so that’s what i’m doing like all the time and i’m drinking i’m drinking water like all the time i’m drinking like um, like power rate gatorade stuff, like that you know to get that that um that weight back on me.
You know also the power you know: nice, bro, nice, bro, nice bro, but yeah dennis uh, really looking forward to your fight, i hope uh.
I know you’re gon na do well this weekend, bro and then your next one in june.
I actually fight the next day after you in june: oh no, which will be nice, we’re all in the gym preparing together for the tune, fights yeah, i’m looking forward to that and uh yeah brother.
I’M looking forward to seeing you fight this weekend.
As i said, and your next fight and your fights to come any plans uh for for for you for dennis in the next in the future that you would like to tell the viewers at home like uh.
Do you guys eyeing title fights or any big fights on the line of course, of course, the big fights the big idols.
That’S what i’m that’s what i’m conquering! You know, that’s what i’m that that’s my plan.
You know that’s my goal: uh not only to conquering the division, also um, to dominate the division and also like to to hold my titles.
You know, that’s that’s what i’m doing you know everything is going good and i will achieve it.
Also, oh, you will i’ve got uh, big, big beliefs in you, brother, i’ve seen your hard work.
I’Ve seen you in the gym.
I’Ve seen you hit those pads.
I’Ve seen that the fire that you bring into the stable there in and it’s it’s a big fire.
Bro just keep it up, keep the fire burning and yeah, i’m sure in the next couple of months that the big stage boxing will hear the name danish duty – 100 brother.
I believe this so i’m gon na wrap up with the with this interview with just to say to uh, before we wrap up just some five questions out of uh random questions for the viewers uh.
What i’m gon na ask you and then i’d like you to answer those bro we’ll start now, with your favorite color bro, blue blue.
You, like blue man.
I, like your bro you’re, a pimple kind of guy.
I thought man yeah! No, i mean yeah.
Actually, i have two favorite colors, let’s say like blue and green blue and green yeah, nice bro, nice girl, then uh your nickname, dennis jimenez of spartan and how did those come about? Okay? So, let’s, let’s start with um, let’s start with the menace.
So, first of all, uh, my name dennis um is coming from a movie and the movie called then is the menace yeah and it was actually the movie was came out actually at this.
Also at this year, when i was born you know, then my parents were watching the movie.
They were like.
Okay, it is you know, then, and that’s the words that will call me then is the menace.
You know, so that’s why the menace um.
Why sport? Because that’s my that’s my heritage, you know because i’m look i’m seeing myself as a as a modern day spartan.
You know i’m fighting in this.
You know um in this area.
You know in the ring you know in the square circle.
So that’s what’s important.
Nice bro nice bro um, two upcoming fights i wan na just share your views on that we’ve got spence versus i mean not youtube, who got spencer and you guys who you got there: spanx fans and uh stevenson and um.
What do you call it? Well, this this um man, that’s a hard one.
That’S the hard one! That’S not so hard yeah, but i think 100.
It can be a tough one, nice bro, nice bro and then, if you had to walk upon 5 000 euros, what would you do with it? In one minute man, i would save it, can you save it, put it in your pocket? Bro, hey! You wouldn’t buy your white flowers or something bro yeah of course, but for that i don’t need 5 000 euros bro.
What do you mean nice, brother, nice, brother, yeah, maintenance.
I know you, you got uh it’s your fight week.
I don’t want to keep you brother uh.
Thank you for taking this time and letting us know a little bit about who you are uh.
We wish you good luck for your upcoming fights on friday.
I know you’re gon na smash it brother uh, good luck for your upcoming fights this year, i’ll be in camp with you for your next one and uh yeah.
If the fans want to get hold of you brother, any last words where we can get hold of you, where we can watch you, will you fight to be live? Just? Let us know please, of course, guys and um you can.
You can check it out.
You know on a live stream um, but first of all, you can also follow me on instagram at the real dennis doughty, um yeah.
It’S also in the link, you know and you can check it out.
You can see, there’s a live stream and you can watch all my fights over there and um stay tuned, be radiant and follow me lovely brother.
Well, dennis thanks for your time, brother.
I know you got.
You have to rest now and get ready mentally for your fight.
Thank you for taking this time out to speak to me brother.
I really enjoyed this and uh yeah i’ll, see you in the gym and good luck for your fights on friday.
