Hello there talking fight fans around the world, welcome once again to another episode of the scoop featuring the champ ola ray and i’m curious to see what you to hear what you’ve got lined up for us tonight for the rest of the week.
I’M going to be talking about the other robberies that plague just one fighter, who just happens to be one of my favorite all of all time.
Um.
This fight that we’re going to do right now goes down is one of my all-time screaming at the television mad worst robberies.
It’S overwhelmingly apparent why this happened.
The younger prettier, more marketable sensation is given the win against any and everything called common sense.
Sweet mother of all that is holy larry merchant and i actually agreed on this, like dogs are being chased by cats in the streets.
If that isn’t a sign of the apollo apocalypse coming, i really don’t know what it is.
My name is bola raymond.
This is a scoop now being a gold medal, winning member of the class of 84 los angeles summer olympic games was one of pernell whitaker’s achievements, his professional career, spanned for over three decades as a fighter, and he amassed a record of 40 wins with four losses And one draw now um and only at one no contest but 17 knockouts pernille is arguably the only fighter in my top 10 list that wasn’t a puncher.
He was a pure boxer, like by the very definition of of the sport, winning the crown in four different uh divisions and lineal championships in two in the lightweight and the welterweight.
He was nothing shy of amazing.
Now this week, i’m going to showcase two of his losses and one of his draws.
This is one of his uh losses.
Now um jiren is the lightweight god to me um, but one accolade that pernell surpassed him in is that pernell defended the lineal title more times than any other lightweight with that number being six, no small feat at all his opponent that we are talking about today Is none other than the golden boy oscar de la hoya? This other sensation was also a gold medal.
Member of the 92 barcelona summer olympic games and was coasting with a record of 23 fights with 23 wins, having already been in his short career, the world champion.
In three different weight divisions, this was his first fight at welterweight and well um yeah, the bell hadn’t even rung yet, and it was already an uphill battle for pernille.
This is the golden boy.
The face of the sport like he got his first fight at welterweight was against the world champion the lineal world champion for that matter.
Something’S up now oscar later expressed how pernell was quicker and has much has much better jab than he had originally expected.
Yeah there’s.
There’S a reason for that: um round one begins, and it was a tactical feel-out round where oscar technically is learning what he should have been expecting, and that was that he was up against this.
The slickest, arguably the most dominant defense defensive fighter of all time round, or he said i couldn’t find now.
I couldn’t find the punch stats um for the round in particular, but with the naked eye.
I would give oscar the second round see round two oscar increased.
The pressure and in doing so i gave him the nod that was really slight now this is where round three.
This is where things go first up, i was, i saw this as being a dominant realm for panel and successfully getting by oscar’s left jab.
He used this round to, he would slip oscar’s left jab because he he’d slip into the power and then get inside and land his left uppercut to the body.
He did this several times over the course of the round and it was the beginning of his combination.
He went on and this was nothing.
This was nothing new.
There was one punch that that i remember where, in the first round, oscar landed one jab of 14.
.
This is oscar de la hoya, the future of hall of famer.
It was just like this all fight long one of the times in the third round.
He then slipped the jab, as he had done so many times before, rushed in with the left uppercut, as he had done so many times before, connected with the left uppercut to the body, as he had done so many times before.
But this time, as he hit with the left uppercut his forehead hit oscar’s chin and gave him a little cut under his eye.
Now the wc has a rule where, in the event that there’s a head clash, regardless of whether or not it was intentional or not, the uncut athlete is deducted a point.
So it’s a little harsh, but it’s it’s it’s the rules of engagement.
So therefore it is and pernell was deducted a rule, a point in the third round, even though he successfully outclassed oscar that round.
I wonder what happened if both uh, both athletes got cut from an accidental headbutt round.
Four was another tactical round of which i have purnell, giving oscar a boxing lesson: um late in the fourth round, oscar attempted to our story: oscar switched to southpaw, where most people don’t really notice that oscar’s actually a natural southpaw, he he’s actually left-handed and um.
He only fights orthodox so, as he has his dominant hand out front um, but he turned southpaw and in an attempt to actually steal the round.
He opened up a flurry of punches with, like seven eight seconds left.
Now it looked impressive until you saw it in slow motion, and you realize that not one of those punches actually landed on purnell.
I firmly believe that that scene from the movie series matrix where you have the character dodging bullets and one just happens to touch his knee.
I think they stole that from pernell whitaker.
That’S exactly how inhuman he looked with that when asked post fight.
Why did you decide to turn southpaw at that at that junction in time? Oscar said that he wanted to give a different look, wanted to challenge um pernell with a different look, a different stance, which i don’t completely buy.
Actually i don’t buy at all um.
I think what he did was the orthodox dance was not working, so he had to try something that makes sense if it’s not broke, why fix it if he was having success with the orthodox dance? Why change anything? He wasn’t? But again that is my take in an attempt to steal the round.
Oscar threw huge punch, combinations in the cell phone stance and looked impressive yeah, but yet again nothing landed um.
The fifth round was another technical chess game in which the end of it ended with a compubox um numbers reading that would occur through 25 and 49 punches, while landing 102.
oscar threw 260 punches.
One punch or 11 punches more but landed 92.
.
The sixth round was more the same with the comfort box numbers looking like whitaker, throwing 57 punches in that round and landing 33, whereas oh sorry um, where landed 19, whereas oscar threw 33 and landed 13.
.
The next few rounds were more the same, but the ninth round.
Something interesting happened – and this was the first time in his career that this happened.
He got knocked down or, more importantly, a knockdown was awarded to oscar de la hoya.
Now truth be told, it was nothing more than just a slip he just got caught while he was off balance, but all the same.
It’S a 10-8 round for pernil.
Moving on to the tenth round.
We saw yet another round of panel tagging oscar, like he was fresh produce with his jab and to be fair to oscar.
He was actually he was actually landing.
More power punches, but overall, punches was going to pronoun.
The sport of boxing is both punching and touching and not being touched.
The fact that purnell well couldn’t crack an egg doesn’t diminish his ability to box.
At the end of the tenth round, um compubox numbers had purnell throwing 505 punches and landing 202, whereas oscar threw 468 punches atlanta 164.
.
The rate of accuracy was consistent throughout the fight.
Pernell was landing at 40 percent.
Oscar was landing at 34.
.
Cannell was throwing more punches.
How do you, how does he not get the w? How does he not get the nod, uncharacteristically um, harold lederman, the one of the ringside color commentators, but also he they count on him to score.
The fight saw this fight going for oscar, which is rare that him and i don’t see eye to eye um but um, so be it we’re normally on the same page, no in the 11th round, the fight really heats up and pernell shows his utter utter superiority.
In that started fighting, but this time it wasn’t uh pronounced sitting on the outside, countering and slipping in.
He stood right inside the pocket in exchange, slipping, countering slipping, countering banging banging right up, close and in front of him, and yet the punch stats still had pernell landing at 40 percent and oscar at 34 um.
The numbers were 500 and um thrown with 219 landed for pernell, and yet oscar had 517 with 175 thrown.
This is, this is just a no-brainer and yet, and yet is, are the 12th and final round was one where pernell really hammered or handed things up for the crowd.
Now, in him doing this, he he had been doing this throughout the fight in like take, for instance, the fourth round, where oscar finished the round with that big flurry and when he slipped everything he goes back to the corner.
Oh, like all flamboyant, let’s use, let’s use flamboyant um and playing up to the crowd.
Now.
This scenario works well worked like a charm for fighters like ray ray leonard and um, even even muhammad ali, when you play up to the crowd, they fall in love with you, they’re cheering for you, and success followed you for whatever reason in this fight.
Nothing happened.
Nothing of the sort actually, because, where you he had every right to be celebrating, he was dominating a guy who was a future hall of famer it’d, be one thing: it feels to have done the same thing to my sister, who very well can’t spell boxing, yet Them to oscar de la hoya, i’m sorry he had every right to celebrate, and everybody in the boxing world who had an appreciation for the support of boxing, should have been celebrating along with him.
The final punch stat were that purnell threw 5 and 82 punches and landed 200 157 punches and consistency was still alive and well with pernell landing 40 oscar 34.
Now the scores of the fight read as such: 115 to 111, 116 to 110 twice and the win goes to oscar de la hoya.
What fight were they watching like genuinely? What fight were they watching? The punch stats actually depict a completely different fight from a different universe and yet oscar the golden boy, the pretty one, gets the win.
Larry merchant did a post-fight interview with oscar uh immediately after the fight, and i feel oscar knew he got a gift in the post-writing interview.
Um larry asked if pernell was what he thought he would be and oscar said no.
His jab was amazing and he was a lot harder to hit a lot harder to catch, but he felt that he won the fight um.
I think that’s a contradiction return, but that’s okay.
He then asked him if you’d like a rematch of what she immediately says.
Yes, he wants a rematch, but why do you want to rematch? Well, he didn’t feel that he dominated purnell’s style, so he now that he knows his style.
He wants to go back and really train for his style and dominate it.
I think he is actually admitting the fact that he lost that fight.
He knows he lost that fight.
He knows he got a gift and i, like i, don’t know if there’s gon na be anyone who’s gon na tell me otherwise it.
I support this fight.
116.
112 for for purnell, easy and all day he he won this fight eight rounds to four easy.
This was said the rematch again he was asked.
If you do, a rematch was all absolutely i’d, love to do a rematch.
I i’d insist on yeah.
Unfortunately, the rematch.
Never happened, why didn’t it happen? Well, it could have something to do with the fact that his promoter was there and saw that he lost that fight and said you know what you got a gift.
Let’S run with it argument what the argument he told him was, it doesn’t make business sense yeah because he got beat run with the gift.
This was another black guy on the sport of boxing.
As far as i’m concerned, the punch stats tell the whole story, and i i don’t know i i did not know, then i still don’t know what to say in regards to what what would you tell the late great pronoun whitaker? I think he took it like a champion.
He was smiling laughing.
He said in his post-fight interview.
He claims that he felt that he won 10 of the 12 rounds easy and over above that he didn’t think that oscar was going to ever give him a rematch.
Meanwhile, meanwhile, he was the champion.
The rules of engagement dictate you have to beat the champ to be the champ none of this questionable stuff.
If it’s a questionable round, it’s supposed to go to the champ and yeah, but he’s a golden boy he’s another gift in the event that you have anything to say or your opinions of this fight was contrary to what mine is bring.
It come to my office and let let’s just let’s hash this out, no leave the comments in the comments below.

It’S your boy, balla, that’s good! Thanks, very much fred.
That was amazing uh.
I am really looking forward to tomorrow night’s episode, because if you get emotional about this one, i’m sure it’s it’s it, it really is heart-wrenching to see like honestly, he is an absolute treasure if you saw even in this fight like if you saw his movement like They should they could give seminars on what defense looks like by what he did if you’re a true purist, if you’re a true lover of the sport, it has nothing to do with power punches and knockouts.
Knockouts is, oh, dear god, um anyways.
This is boxing.
This is what makes the sport beautiful and, by doing these things actually tarnished that it actually sets the sport backwards.
So yeah and there’s a couple more out of curiosity not to give anything away but from the same era, or are you going to jump between eras? No, it’s it’s it’s all.
It all happened to pernell.
Oh man.
He had three robberies like three blatant all right.
This is what i’m saying wow so in a nutshell, we’re gon na go through the life and times of pernell whitaker and see how he got robbed.
Not once not twice but three times three times and remember, his record has four losses, and this was that this was robbery number one that was robbery number one: okay, um yeah, there’s two more to come that much better wow yeah awesome.
Well, thanks very much.
I appreciate that great research, uh great analysis and uh great emotion too.
I got pretty excited there, especially those comments about your sister right.
Okay, we’ll see you tomorrow night right thanks very much and thank you good listenership good viewership like share subscribe.
