Neil’S episode – oh oh, my apologies.
I was off on another screen.
Welcome talking fight fans around the world, welcome to another episode of the scoop with champ bola ray and we’ve been doing an excellent series on the post ali era featuring the fab four and their rivalries.
Uh, the great fights, the great fighters that dominated that particular era in time in boxing and what an era it was and you’ve been doing, a great job of analysis of the fights and the fighters themselves uh.
What do you got for us tonight? Champ? What do you got well um tonight, i’m actually going to be talking about two fights um, but the first one was a collision course that was three years in the making.
These fighters were nothing shy of iconic and has stood the test of time as arguably the greatest first round in boxing in a boxing fight and the greatest three round of boxing.
No idea why the second round didn’t catch as much notoriety, but i will um, but the first fight that i’ll be discussing was seen as the impossible happening and cementing the other fighter in the history books as the greatest right hand.
Of all time.
My name is bala raymond olubuwali, and this is the scoop.
After a narrow, unanimous loss to marvin hagler for his wbc middleweight crown duran went back to super welterweight division and was met with a great deal of momentum in adulation the performance against hagler cemented.
Well, more so that the fact that hagler was such a juggernaut, an absolute juggernaut, um restored the faith in duran that the man that terrorized the lightweight division was back.
He had a mandatory challenger against one mike mccallum, but he didn’t want to fight.
He wanted to fight uh hagler, i mean it hurts first and he would fight mccallum afterwards.
He gave he gave the wba an ultimatum saying.
Let me fight herds first or else i’ll relinquish the belt.
The wba said: no, he relinquished the belt and the fight was scripted for him to have a dance with hearns for turns.
Wbc super welterweight title now: tommy was the favorite to keep this strap.
He was eight years younger.
He was five and a half inches taller, but most remarkably he had a reach advantage of one foot, um yeah.
Why did duran get out of his bed like yeah after his performance with hagler? There was quite a few that was actually believing that he’s going to, or he had the capability of doing something amazing and pulling off an upset june.
15.
1984 um.
The dance was on now um, even more so before that, two weeks before the fight, they crossed paths in the elevator at the hotel, which point in time in typical duran fashion.
He tells hers i’m going to kill you and in typical hearns fashion, laid back just simply says no mass.
He drew fleur’s blood now when the fight actually began.
The first round saw tommy handling duran rather easily um, making him look simple, hiding behind the jab um dren did not have an answer for that again.
Reach advantage.
One foot, he didn’t have an answer.
He found a great deal difficult to try and get in on the body.
He then went around one minute into the fight tommy catches duran with a left hook counter as duran is attempting desperately to attack tommy’s body.
This opened up a cut over duran’s eye, a pretty bad one.
Actually now, with 30 seconds left in the fight uh in the first round, duran then hits or sorry uh tommy hits duran with a clean monster right hand, and down goes durant.
He makes the cut he makes the makes the count and tommy jumps on top of him opens up.
Fleury catches him with an uppercut down, goes duran a second time on queer street, but makes the count, and then the bell goes ending the first round.
Duran’S second had to come into the ring in a system into the corner.
He had no idea where he was round two begins with tommy back on duran again, and he backs him into the ropes and then he just unleashes an incredible flurry of punches just about at the one minute.
Mark.
Tommy catches drown with a monster right hand, at which point time duran falls on his face, tony one by tko or ko for that matter, with one minute and seven seconds into the first into the second round.
In all the matchups of all the greats.
Nothing has been so one-sided as this contest tommy completely obliterated duran, which speaks volumes because leonard, didn’t oblite, leonard lost um.
Much content to germain hagler didn’t have hagler almost lost to duran coming in the 13th round.
At the end of the 13th round was up by one point on two of the judge’s scorecards so to have hagler to have hers come along and completely annihilate him like he was a school girl speaks volumes as to the magnitude of this of this individual.
We fast forward to april 15 1985.
.
This matchup is build the fight only to then after the fight be remembered as the war in history hearns was the current uh wbc super middleweight champion.
Sorry, junior uh super wealthy champion and the number one contender for the other.
Two belts at the super welterweight level hagler was the unified and lineal champion at middleweight pre-fight interviews.
It would seem that there was no respect nor love flowing between the either fighter.
These two established – or these two yeah establish this narrative like they just did not like each other.
It was mean mugging, it was posturing.
It was a whole gambit, but couple that, with their incredible incredible, um resume hagler at the time had having defeated 10 guys 10 opponents, nine of them by knockout by this point in time, um in defense of his uh wb c middleweight title and hearns completely destroying The legend durant in two rounds: this was a media frenzy.
Everybody was gon na, be glued to see this fight.
It was.
It was beyond ridiculous.
Now round, one begins in nothing flurry, it did not.
Disappoint hearns usually starts off slowly attempting to establish his jab and set the narrative of well.
He wants to box he’s gon na he’s gon na box.
You on his turns you don’t get the right to rush in and dictate the fight the contest, but instead of dancing he started swinging.
He was dancing and then caught her handler with an uppercut.
A vicious uppercut peggler was actually rocked grabbed him and at this point in time, um burns could have attempted to establish his jab again and just play nice, nice and move on, but um.
No, no, it went back to slugfest 1985.
.
It was just non-stop action now during one of the exchanges exchanges hagler had got cut in his forehead when the first round ended, hearns walked back to his corner and told the legendary trainer um emmanuel stewart that he had broken his hand in the first round.
The fight must go on.
What can you do ring magazine ranked this as the greatest opening round in history just to let you just to give you an idea as to how action-packed it actually was now round.
Two.
The pace is significantly less, but it’s still impressive.
Just one round hearns was attempting to stop to jab and dance, but stumbled quite a few times.
He um, even ray leonard, saw this from ringside, as he was doing color commentary and noted that burns needs to get his legs underneath him.
He was tired.
He he exhausted, he got, he took a beating and he exhausted himself, even though two of the three judges gave him that first round burns uh hagler didn’t care, he went back after him, he ran after him and he’s banging him all over the place, and it Was a war again gets him up against ropes and he is pounding him almost tommy falling through the ropes now um hearns isn’t is in trouble, know where to hide nowhere to do much he’s in trouble so now going into the third round.
The third round opens up and once again cruz is attempting to establish a jab.
Keep that long range keep try to slow this madman down, keep that jab in his face and then about a minute in he reopens that cut that he that he inflicted upon uh marvin in the first round and it’s gushing bad.
The ref stops the fight calls the ringside official uh physician up to look him over now.
Hagler gets a green light, but he knows that this fight can be stopped at any time if he gets peppered with that in that cut and it opens up and it bleeds even more profusely.
Therefore, he has to go to work.
Yes, he has to get tommy out of there because he will lose his fight and he turned into a raging ball.
After one side step.
He caught tommy high on the on the head with a right hand, which sent tommy sailing into the ropes as tom was sort of dancing over to the ropes.
He was smiling somewhat attempting to say: i’m not hurt, but clearly he was and had glare was in mad pursuit jumped on him and crushed him caught him with a monster left hook, which then resulted in tommy crumbling like a house of cards onto the campus.
Hedler wins the war in nothing, shy of spectacular fashion.
This cemented hagler as the beast, if all his other accolades hadn’t.
This cemented him as the beast of the decade of the division, one of the greatest of all time now, like i said prior to them, entering the ring, it was widely accepted that the hatred for each other was second to none.
Only to have hearns tell his team not to make mention of him breaking his right hand, because he did not want to dis or to take any thunder away from hagler’s win in the back in the change rooms.
When herz was ready, he walked over to hagler’s change room to congratulate him.
Nothing nice has been said between these two guys for months and he walks in all french congratulatory great fight and it was finished with them embracing now they say that stiles makes fights.
This is an ongoing submit, um quote per se.
These three combatants are living proof that this and you can add a few fighters to into the mix um when it came to the 80s and these iconic fights, because just because one person beat another doesn’t mean that the other another person is going to beat.
You tommy or duran, beat leonard letter goes on to fight uh tommy, that’s tomorrow’s session.
I will that won’t speak about it, but duran almost lose.
Uh beats hagler in a close, close, close fight, hagler obliterates tommy, but tommy knocked out um, there’s no rhyme or reason to it.
It’S all about styles, it’s all about what you bring to the table that day.
What would happen if durant had it broken his hand in the end of the 13th round, with with hagler? Would history be different? Who knows, i’m really excited to see exactly or more, not so much excited as much as grateful that i was actually around to witness these fights in the time that i did um.
It showed a lot, and not only that, surprisingly enough, not enough coaches actually looked at these fights for the historic, like the tactical advances that they offered to support, but, like i’ve said so many times.
I want to thank you guys for the contribution to boxing history and yeah.
I salute you with that.

I’M your boy baller! That’S the scoop! Thanks very much! That’S an excellent excellent analysis of both fights uh.
Thank you, yeah, that’s uh cut leaves you speechless, nothing more to say.
No, it’s really good.
It just leads us through the 80s to where we’re at with these four guys, the back and forth uh, not just uh legendary in terms of the sport but legendary in terms of that that tv audience that grew with them precisely they dominated the sports pages throughout The 80s they really did – and i can attest that because i was around and quite a lively 20 something in the 80s yeah.
So they were there, they were there.
They were ferocious too uh in in the ring and outside the new thought.
You thought they hated.
Each other you really did yeah and and to hear that uh uh.
You know many years later that they go into the dressing room after the fact and – and i don’t know if they shook each other’s hand or hugged or whatever, but they talk they actually hug.
There’S almost like a switch went off like i have people that i hate my general mo is i just stay away from you, because if i around you, it’s going to be bad, these people, these guys had that kind of that kind of venom against each other, Plus they they’re incredibly capable one explosion only to have them go off and embrace and respect each other’s ability and contribution to boxing it’s rather remarkable.
Indeed, it is well.
I look forward to tomorrow night’s episode uh as i’ve enjoyed.
All of these has been fantastic.
It’S a great series that you’re bringing forward and reminding me of and reminding an entire boxing nation of it was a it was a great era and uh and one that we should all share and do cherish.
So, thank you very much.
I appreciate it.
I’M sure there’s some views out there too, as well fantastic stuff uh, as the champ says like share subscribe and we’ll see you tomorrow, night
