There we are hello, welcome once again to talk and fight and a special episode of neil the deal, because we have a guest that we’ve been waiting for for quite a few weeks now.
Aren’T we we’ve been waiting uh? Well, since you ever introduced them.
I can’t remember how long ago that was neil uh, but you’ve been talking quite excitedly for the past few nights about i supposed to guess.
Our special guest is sid vanderpool, uh, a great canadian boxer, and here he is joining us tonight, so i’ll leave in your good hands.
Neil, take it away.
Let’S hear what sid has to say.
Thank you very much.
Graham.
This is one of the greatest days.
I actually am here with uh a gentleman that i’ve looked up to for a long time.
I seen him fight a bunch of times here in mississauga, with some of his family members were involved, and it was, it were great.
It was, i just loved it.
I thought you were awesome, sid, so anyways everybody thanks for coming out.
I was singing a lot last night, so i lost my voice.
A little bit kind of stretched.
You know did a little bit too much.
You know how it is so because i was so excited guys about sid being here.
I forgot what i was doing.
So that’s what happens when you got superstar world champion.
Boxers hang out with me.
This is awesome thanks, graham and thanks sid for coming out guys.
The likes the shares the comments, the subscriptions, absolutely unbelievable, please thank you.
So much keep them coming we’re having a great time over here and we we got the big man here today.
Everybody i’d like to introduce to you, ladies and gentlemen, in attendance around the world presented by the neil the deal show and sanctioned by boxing news and talking fight.
com, the former nabo super middleweight champion of the world, mr sid, the jewel vanderpool there.
He is guys how you doing sid nice to see you thanks for coming out.
Buddy, hey, listen! Thank you! So much for that intro i mean.
After that i mean i could pretty much go home like that.
Was it right there right there brother about that? One.
Thank you.
I got more.
I got more one more little thing to add: let’s get ready to rumble there, you go guys, so everybody out there guys this is sid vanderpool we’re going to talk to sit a little bit about his life in boxing, hopefully he’ll.
Let us know some of the good times.
I’M sure there was good ones, bad ones, it’s life, you know, so we’re going to talk to sid we’re, basically just how about sid.
Why don’t we just talk a little bit about your uh, your career? Let’S you know, let’s say um at what age, for instance, did you decide that you were interested in boxing? Was it at a very young age or middle-aged uh teenager? You know that kind of thing, yeah, yeah yeah, no for sure.
Well, it actually wasn’t me.
Oddly enough, it was my dad, my dad um, i have four older, bruce ann.
We were all he was our trainer and he coached us.
We were at a uh at a boxing match an event and my bro one of my brothers was fighting and the promoter from toronto uh the late vince bagnetto came to the back.
The dressing rooms he’s like i don’t have enough fights tonight.
Does anyone have anyone else that can fight and my dad looks right? He looks at me, he goes he’ll fight.
Looked up at him like no, i will and uh.
He put my brother’s trunks on me and i jumped in the ring – and i was uh six and a half years old and i lost a boy years old that night and uh.
So it was kind of just baptism by fire.
So to speak, that that is awesome.
Thank you very much sid for that.
That was great.
So you just mentioned to me, which is you know fantastic? Do you have some brothers that are also boxers? Is that correct, yeah, yeah um, all my brothers, all boxed all.
At the same time, you should travel around ontario canada, north america, for that matter, in a van just going to different fights and different tournaments and uh two, my brothers turned pro.
My oldest brother felix turned pro uh back in the 80s, so i remember watching him box when i was like 10 years old, you know, being smoke, filled arenas watching him fight as a pro and um.
That’S actually why i, i was a softball um, because my oldest brother felix was a soldier to him and i just stood the way he stood and no one ever corrected me and i got pretty good at it, but i’m actually right-handed.
So i just kind of mimicked what he was doing, so he was a pro and then my uh most brother, felix fitz fitz was a pro as well and he won quite a few titles as a professional and um.
You know uh, so it’s in my bloodline.
That’S that’s awesome, sid right on so are your brothers still fighting or no no they’re, all done they’re all done, yeah we’re.
We all we’re all done and uh just uh in the game in some capacity, whether uh, you know coaching or or just uh just fans, but we all we grew up.
That brings us together.
We always love to get together and watch a good fight right on man.
That’S it so you still like watching watching fights.
I guess uh like we all.
Do you just you know you go to box nation or whatever you do.
I don’t you know or watch them online.
I guess: hey yeah, yeah um, you know this one.
The zone has been uh, they bring some fights the uh, the joshua that happens, that’ll be a big one and uh.
You know so yeah lots garcia.
We just watched the garcia fight lots of lots of exciting things going on in boxing nowadays right on.
That’S great, that’s awesome, sid! So i just have a quick little thing about your four brothers.
It’S just kind of i’m curious when you guys were growing up.
Did you guys kind of punch it up a bit amongst each other or was it was it i love it? You know you guys, were you just loving each other? Were you beating each other up which were what or both i don’t know? Oh yeah, we i mean, i guess we we loved each other, so much we kind of just uh.
You know we showed love in different ways, but yeah.
We definitely definitely some uh some bloody nights.
Um.
We had a boxing ring in our backyard.
I mean that’s just what we did so it uh it.
It helped improve our fight game.
That’S for sure.
Is there any one incident when you were growing up with your brothers that comes to mind that the the neil of the deal fans guys? Thank you very much for everything.
This is great.
We have sid here um that you remember as a kid kind of a funny story.
Maybe, like your brother, put your shorts on by accident, or he had your gloves on.
Oh my gosh fun these stories, so i mean sure i can’t tell my dad he or she won’t know, but um we had to run every day before get up.
We go without that’s just what we did.
We go running uh.
It was five five kilometers.
You know and we come home and so my my oldest brother felix – he got smart he’s like hey, listen guys.
If we run up here and we cut through the first, we can actually go through the forest to cut about half of our time.
So we would go run to the forest we play.
We have.
There is all these apple apple trees in there.
So we take crab apples.
We throw apples at each other for about nine minutes and we finish up and there’s actually a little pond there too and we’d splash water on our face and then we’d finish off our run.
Listen.
You know we learned how to have fun.
That’S that’s great sid! That’S a good one right there for sure i’ll tell you when i was a kid we used to have a chestnut tree, so we used to take these giant sticks and throw them into the tree to knock the chestnuts down.
I don’t know it was like a giant piece of wood and you just throw it into the tree.
It’S the most weirdest game, but i guess we liked it right kind of like you like throwing apples, oh yeah and those apples hurt, i’m sure, oh yeah, sure hit with a blazing apple from a guy your size.
I wouldn’t want you to throw an apple at me.
Man look at the size of you no, but it helped with our reactions.
Apple.
That’S right! Actually, you worked it helped! You work on your foot, speed right, that’s right! Yeah for sure it’s amazing what little things like that can actually do for your career.
You thought it was all apples, but it’s actually training.
Hey listen rocky used to chase the chicken around right, though you know, he’s got ta, be creative, that’s correct, and in those days we didn’t have any money.
So basically that’s what you did so anyways.
This is awesome.
This is one of the.
This is a really good interview, thanks again sid for coming man.
I’M like i’m just going to talk a little bit about something i saw.
I saw you fight at the hershey center back in around 2003 and i was hanging out with your brother or your cousin, troy.
It was your brother because i was friends with uh hayashi yeah yeah yeah yeah.
So when i was there with those guys so to speak, i met you, your brother and you were, you were actually the you were the head.
You were the main guy in the car.
You were the headliner.
Okay, i’m pretty sure.
I’M pretty sure i saw you.
You know how it is, you see so many over there.
It’S like okay, i remember there was an oriental guy said.
I wanted to ask you, i can’t remember his name but he’s from mississauga and his last name is like tab or something tran yeah yeah yeah yeah, but he got knocked out cold the day i went to see him.
Is it rico tan yeah? Rico? 10.
I think that’s his name yeah man.
Oh, i want to meet that guy.
He was supposed to be like the uh, the next big thing or something and we went there.
I don’t know man and that guy got crushed in about 30 seconds, like with 10 seconds or something sid like.
I couldn’t believe it.
I’M like this.
He was the you you were on the program on the inside of the program, but that guy was the guy on the front of the program, like that’s the big fight yeah and it lasted all seven seconds.
You know that is that the guy is that his name.
I think so he’s crazy, because i can remember what you’re getting did he ever fight against? I don’t think so.
Do you remember? Did he fight somebody from out of town to like? Did he fight a mexican or did he fight a local? Do you remember that yeah it was a mexican or a mexican or something panamanian, or some guy like that yeah.
That’S the thing right like when you bring fighters in from other countries um these guys will fight like every other day, unsanctioned and they’ll come in and they’ll.
You know on their on their fight record.
They’Ll say you know, eight fights, but they’ve had 50 fights.
You just don’t know like it’s crazy, so yeah, it’s you take a gamble when you’re bringing guys from you know, especially in mexico, um, because, like canelo, how many fights canelo had like he turned pro.
I think he was 18, but i think he already had like.
I don’t know 90 or 100, i don’t know he can’t even count as amateur fights, because you know some fights are unsanctioned so to speak.
So it’s it’s uh, it’s risky.
Sometimes you bring.
You know, fighters from other countries, yeah! Well, sid! That’S funny! We’Re talking about this because i mentioned this the other night because amateur stats in mexico, i think it was canelo.
His trainer said that he got credited for whatever 12 or 15 or 25 amateur fights, but really he had 10 or 15 more, but they were all in uh.
What do you call it? Um small towns in mexico that are, like you, said unsanctuary they’re, like bars, or something he’s fighting in the bar, but there’s no documentation of it like like professional documentation, but the trainer knows and the coach knew right, yeah so yeah.
So that’s it right.
I think even scotty olsen when i talked to scott scotty olsen.
He told me that he had more.
I said you, you only have this many on your career record, but when we talked to him he said no, no, no.
He had more yeah yeah.
So i guess that i guess that happens all the time he said.
I guess it does.
I’M just rico’s record come up there [ Music ].
He was 12 and two with 11, like of course, so it makes sense.
Right.
12 wins a link.
Kos, that’s impressed.
Yep yeah he was, he was supposed to be according to what i was told from some inside people that this guy was supposed to be uh kind of like the next big canadian kid yeah yeah yeah yeah.
So i i i i remember to you.
You were fighting on all different cards there at the hershey center one.
I think it was one fight with your brother.
One fight was your, was troy your cousin and then you then, of course you right so, but i remember you were kind of all together.
Your brother was on the undercard of you.
I think it was your younger brother or something mm-hmm yeah yeah we yeah yeah, that’s what it was yeah.
You did man you killed that guy over there man.
That was awesome thanks.
That was wicked.
Oh, you gave him one of these one of those a couple of those a couple of these.
It was like that guy was crushed.
Oh man, he did.
I remember he did give you a bit of a fight like he didn’t give up, but he always tested.
He was not giving up easy.
I think you won in like the eighth round, seventh or eighth yep.
I think i know exactly which fight you’re talking about too yeah.
That was a good fight yeah, i i don’t, it was a.
It was a.
It was like a a guy from out of town, i’m pretty sure yeah.
Was it not yeah that one yeah? I remember that yeah he was from the us you’re.
Absolutely yes, exactly because i’m reading the program and i’m going.
Who are these guys that our guys are fighting i’ve never heard of them either right? So i’m looking them up and trying to figure it out before i go to the fight who they are and yeah, then i go and watch the fight.
You know what i mean so anyways guys thanks a lot sid vanderpool the jewel, the big jewel man is here guys.
Sid is one of the best canadian boxers in the history of canada.
He’S probably like.
I don’t know what to tell you this guy’s a world champion.
This is for real.
You know and he’s on my show thanks again sid we’re going to go through a few more things with you, you all right with this sid you good yeah man, i’m great.
Okay right on man thanks, okay cool, so you can correct me if i’m wrong how’s that okay, you were born september 23rd, 1972 in kitchener, ontario uh.
You fought in two weight classes: middleweight, foot, nine, you’re, probably uh.
You had only one fight uh and it was a loss which is to me is: it was a unanimous decision or something on the other guy’s part, so why why originally did you decide to go pro? After only having one amateur fight? Um was like there was a real reason or you just wanted to be a pro right like you, i don’t know.
No, no! No! No so i had uh, i had over 100 amateur fights a hundred yeah over 100 yeah wow.
I didn’t know that there you go guys, i’m completely not so there you go 90 and 11.
, 90 and 11 and how many knockouts of the 90? Oh, is it amateur not not very many, maybe no yeah, no, not as an amateur amateur for me, was all about scoring points right right.
It was okay, yeah, you’re, right, uh, yeah, sorry, but of course i i guess you try to knock the guys out.
I guess is that it’s still the main objective, no um see more like an amateur boxing uh, especially back in my box.
A a hard punch and a saw punch were weighted, the same it didn’t really matter and so to try punches.
You put yourself at risk of staying in or being too close, so it was really about being very quick and being elusive when i was an amateur, so it was you’re getting you know exactly and that’s why, when you turn pro you had to develop, you had To develop a pro style, you had to learn how to sit down your punches take more time and not just throw a bunch of punches.
So it was it uh and it still is, but not quite as much anymore, but still is a learning process.
Learning how to be a pro is different than amateurs right, it’s with any professional sports.
It’S a big jump up.
We all know that guys.
Everybody should know that with any sport like if you’re playing for the toronto, maple, leafs and you’re on the marlies, it’s a big difference between the harleys and the actual leaks.
You know what i mean: [ Music, ] yeah.
So anyway, what i mean like being a it’s, a big jump: yeah yeah, yeah, all right.
So let’s just go over this whole story.
I was going to say you know those types of sports.
So that’s the difference, though, with boxing like with um hockey right you, you got to be drafted um, you can’t just show up and playing energy, but professional boxing.
You just have to be sanctioned by your lordy and there is no like screening process right.
So you know you can have zero.
You could have like you were saying like.
Why did turn pro after one you thought like you? Could somebody could have zero amateur fights and turn pro right, which is very dangerous, and that’s the one thing that uh you know.
It’S a good thing about, i think, uh other organizations where you have that system.
You need to go through um, but the buried entry in boxing uh.
There is there’s, not there’s none.
You can pretty much just get into it.
Wow, i see said i didn’t know that, obviously guys this is the kind of stuff i’m talking about we’re talking to sid vanderpool world champion professional boxer, awesome, humanitarian, absolutely amazing! I can’t believe he’s here guys, it’s really him and he’s telling you the real deal all right, so i just want to say is that must i think we had a little conversation about this with mr mike strange, a little bit sort of he kind of talked A little bit about it, how the the sanctioning of the fights here in i guess, canada or ontario, is very sort of not very thorough.
I guess thorough um and uh.
I i know the doctors are pretty thorough.
Like i understand, if you’ve been knocked out, you can’t fight for six months and but then guys jump state to state and then they do all kinds of crazy stuff and then they end up getting hurt right.
Yeah i mean ontario is one of the is one of the stricter ones.
Um has been for 10 15 20 years.
The medicals in in ontario are probably some of the the strictest in the world, um, it’s more so in the states.
Other provinces that are a little bit relaxed falling behind in terms of safety um, you know, maybe almost over, because to get you don’t keep getting mri as every single, like your brain scan every single year that rates that, but it is a requirement uh uh with Ontario, so it’s pretty it’s pretty strict in ontario for professional boxing [ Music ] yeah.
Well, like uh like i was telling you earlier on sid.
I was uh lucky enough to be friends with mr ken hayashi and uh.
He was the one sanctioning through the commissioner.
Basically, all your fights and anybody else’s fight, so we talked me and ken talk a number of times about situations that were uh occurring daily and he was addressing the issues.
But it’s you know the situation.
The government is not um, say boxers they’re the government, so he was, i guess, the commission’s in place to keep uh fighters safe, right, yep, yep, yeah, yeah, all right, cool man yeah.
It’S about the you know the promoters want to try and make money.
The fighters want to fight and uh.
You know the the commissioner and the commission is trying to keep everybody safe, and you know there’s always going to be conflict.
You know everyone thinks that so-and-so is not doing their job or you know their their their their hindering, and so it’s just it’s really just a it has to become a you know: a working working partnership in order to work well and uh.
I think now, with the new commissioner uh luke, uh luke is uh, he’s been man he’s been a part of the organization for a long time, working with ken and i think, he’s doing a great job we’ve seen there was such a resurgence of like of uh Professionalising in ontario, you know uh over the past few years it was crazy um.
So i think once gold was done.
I think you know you’ll see it pick right back up again.
That’S crazy! That’S like, like.
I say i think that things were pretty good in ontario.
This is just my opinion, because i i heard what was going on, but i i know for a fact that, yes and you’re absolutely right that the doctors in ontario are very thorough with uh.
Yes, they’re very thorough.
So honestly, i always thought that was a good thing, because that protects you and the most important thing is for you to go home to your family and wife and kids after the fight.
You know yeah, that’s the most important thing, so you’re safe is always the best.
You know it’s the it’s the most important thing to all of us.
You know what i mean so anyways.
Let’S go into a little bit more of your pro career.
If that’s okay – and i really appreciate it saying thanks again man from the bottom of my heart – this is great.
This is awesome, guys, i’m so happy.
Sid sid’s here he’s awesome, guys fought for canada killed it respect.
You know what i mean buddy so nice.
Thank you you’re pro career, apparently, and you can please uh.
We can have this all wrong right.
So please, let us know what the real truth is.
Uh 39 fights 35 wins 23 by knockout.
You had four losses: three of them by knockout uh, your first uh pro fight was march 5th 1993.
That was a win by gail uh.
You won your first five bouts before a loss.
I don’t know who that was too, but i heard you, you won your first five.
Then you lost one but then guys, everybody out there and fight talk and fight land.
Neil the deal show he won, 23 straight after that right on sid right on [, Music.
] yeah so or no yeah, i mean i was pretty determined after that first loss to really kind of i just.
I just knew that i i was better um, and so i needed to do something different after that.
First loss.
I um that’s when i i moved into a tree camp facility and really uh up until that point.
I was the amateur fighting in the pros and uh.
You know after that loss i learned what it meant to be a pro, and you know my coach at that time was was john davenport, the late john davenport, and that man taught me so much just about um being a professional and i’m not saying professional boxer.
I’M just talking about being a professional.
What that entails, whether you’re, a professional, uh lawyer, a carpenter, the work ethic uh, the the attention to detail is the same, and so he taught me how to take it, how to take it seriously and how to see it as um as a discipline and as An art and as a profession and uh, you know all that man a lot and uh.
You know again, that’s why i think you know um the there’s.
I think it was six and a half years of uh.
You know not losing a fight.
It was due to just really understanding uh the process of becoming a professional.
That’S that’s awesome sid.
That is great man.
Awesome awesome, awesome, congrats yeah! Thank you.
Thank you.
I just got a comment from a fan here.
Tell what’s about your friend there.
I guess you know rico rico, dan, so apparently yeah yeah.
This is this is what they’re telling me so rico.
Juice.
10 juice.
10.
juice.
Is that his nickname or something yes, juice, tan yeah? That’S the guy! Okay cool right on! We found him thanks a lot guys for the comment, we’ll ask it about this kind of cool all right, so he was born.
This guy was born in february 26, 1978, toronto and uh he’s a canadian welterweight boxer of chinese and indonesian descent from 2000 to 2003.
.
He retired with a 12 2 and two record 11 kos uh, and he now owns a hawaiian barbecue food, cart or something two of them and that’s what he’s doing he owns a.
He owns a food cart.
Now you know what i mean: that’s that’s.
What he’s doing crazy so anyway, it is the guy i’m just saying, because dude i was at that fight when you were there at that fight, your brothers were always there and everybody was there and yeah.
I was so excited to meet that meet this rico.
Tan guy and uh, basically he went out in an ambulance, so i didn’t get to meet him.
Yeah yeah.
He it was terrible.
I felt bad for him.
I was like that that was terrible.
Like you know, i was in shock.
That’S boxing right.
You can never as big as anyone can be an underdog and the other guy’s the favorite.
Listen one punch changes, everything and that’s what’s so exciting about the fight game.
Yeah true enough eh, true enough, like you, could be up on points and we’ve all seen it guys in the 15th round and like i can tell you about one fight right now.
I think it was thomas hearns and sugar ray leonard, oh great, fight, yeah and and hearns was basically had him and then leonard in the 14th round knocked him out.
The guy was up on every card.
He was beating leonard like easy and then all of a sudden he ran out of gas.
Do you remember, do you remember what angelo dundee said to sugar between rounds? No, i don’t.
Actually, i i remember the fight because he’s my favorite sort of sugar ray leonard everybody knows guys they had the microphone there and he was exactly you’re right.
He was yelling in his face, you’re blowing, it you’re blowing it and he goes he’s just going.
What yeah yeah that was, that was a wicked fight guys if you ever get a chance, even sid just said kearns leonard was awesome.
Oh my gosh, like that’s some of the best stuff i’ve ever seen, really yeah.
You know those guys were awesome fighters, those two.
So, let’s get back to you as big you’re, bigger and better than them, anyways you’re way bigger than they’ll get and better.
That’S it buddy! You are the champ all right guys.
We got the champion tonight, i’m i’m blown away.
I got a few more things to talk to sit about.
You know whenever you’re ready to say neil.
I’M done just tell me i’ll, be glad to say i love you bud no problem.
I got a massage in 10 minutes, but until then i’m good holy cow.
That’S awesome.
I love that stuff right.
I can’t live without massages.
It’S honestly the truth like it’s just we’re old yeah we’re broken and broken.
That’S right of our lifestyle.
Oh my gosh anyways, i’m broken too dude.
So i’ll see you over there, but anyway, all right.
Okay, so your last fight was apparently april 22nd 2005.
It was a loss, i guess and yeah.
What was the decision then? Like uh? Was there something where you um or mario mary air baron in florida and uh? I think that was a tko law.
Uh referee stopped that one i think, like a ninth or tenth round something like thank you tenfold, yeah, ninth or tenth round so yeah, stuff and um.
You know just walking back to the dressing room with my manager stan hoffman and uh.
You know um.
I i remember, you know um hearing from older, with wise trainers and they’re, like i remember just saying, listen when your career is no longer going like this and it starts to go like this.
You know it’s kind of thinking else and for me um.
That was two losses in a row right, and that was two losses in a matter of maybe 12 months and up until that point i had two losses in maybe 11 years.
So for me and you’re like two times, but for me that was a sign.
You know that uh, you know, maybe else enough was walking at the dressing room.
My man said to me hey it’s time to do something else, and i was just like yeah, i’m good with that.
You know, and i i had had a young lady.
I was starting and it was in the catskill mountains or sort of poconos, so that was you know four weeks away from my family and uh.
You know it was like i it was it was, it was hard and it was it was.
It was time i’d achieved everything that i wanted to achieve, and it was time to move on and do something else and uh yeah.
It was i i felt good with uh with that decision at that time.
Sid thanks a lot.
That’S a great story because i mean boxers.
They retire.
Everybody retires at some point.
You know everybody some guys stick around too long.
You know what i mean just maybe they need the money.
I don’t know whatever it is they just do it.
So i just want to thank you for that and keeping yourself safe thinking about your family.
I’M sure your trainers were, they knew they knew.
Everybody knows you’re you’re a man and that’s it right, guys, yeah.
So what are you doing now? Is sid fit still open or no you’re telling to tell my fans to kneel to deal fans about sid fit yeah, so suit fit is a facility, so we have uh 5 000 square feet uh inside of sid fit.
We have two, so we have a um.
A competition size ring and then we have a smaller ring.
We have heavy bags, speed balls, we do nutrition coaching, we have a uh, a wellness, uh wellness uh center as well.
That’S where i’m gon na get my massage.
So we got a wellness center and uh.
You know we do personal training for strength and conditioning um and so really um.
What we do here is we.
We want to look after people, whatever their health and wellness needs.
Are we want to be able to make sure that we can, just you know, take care of them here, um and if we don’t aren’t able to take care of them here, we do have uh an extensive, um, uh database of partners um that we can make Sure that we can give the right help, so you know when you come to us um uh, taking care of your needs, uh, that’s kind of our number one priority and we just kind of uh we enjoy that we’ve grown a reputation as, as you know, one Of the best uh uh students, so competitive boxing is uh our roots, but it’s where we started and it’s not where we are now: it’s not where we’re gon na finish.
