Hello boxing fans around the world welcome once again to another episode of the scoop featuring the champ bola ray on talk and fight, we’re glad you’re with us.
Uh we’ve been having a great month long, quite frankly, learning about the history of boxing and great boxers who’ve been profiled by the champ.
Who do you got lined up for us tonight? Well, who who are you going to shock me with what i mean if t if teddy apples wasn’t shocking enough yeah, you know i got a couple more perfect, perfect, keep lining them up because uh i was bragging about you today saying how much i’m learning it’s Like going to school, i’m being schooled, and even though i was to tell you a fighter had a record of 32 wins two losses in a draw.
One would consider that person to have a decent record.
Now, if i was to tell you that or if i was to tell you that the record was just of world title fight, no, that person is unbelievable, yeah right.
But when you hear that this is one coach and the record of world title fights for just heavy weights, well, then you know you’re dealing with a god full stop.
This one coach has trained over well, he has trained 41 world champions himself over two dozen of them he actually cultivated and brought them to the world title which speaks volumes in its own right.
These are superhuman stats.
I cannot think of another coach who could who has made anything close to this claim, like his boxing iq, is completely out of this world full stop.
My name is bola raymond ulubawali, and this is a scoop born july.
7Th 1944 in bottoms, creek west virginia, was the hall of famer coach emanuel stewart manny.
As he’s known by his friends at the age of 12.
He moved in with his recently divorced mother from his father to detroit now after trying his hand in the automotive industry many years later.
Well, it’s detroit.
You know so outside of singing in motown um.
What else is the city known for at the time he walked into the brewster’s recreational center, which is where joe lewis and eddie fudge were training? Now i’m uncertain as to whether or not he had this knowledge prior to making that decision to go and train at that gym.
But what i do know is that, because of that decision, history turned corner for the absolute better, so many went on to compete in the amateur realm and had a stellar career in the amateurs um.
He had a record of 94 wins with three losses.
He actually went on to win the national national golden blows in 1963 at venomline.
He was nothing shot of a specimen but wow.
Well, i i don’t know um, i don’t know of another fighter that had such a a decorated image career, at least in that time.
Now, with a record like that, you’d think that the pro scene is inevitably the next step, but it wasn’t um manny didn’t have the fire for being an athlete.
He might prefer being a coach.
So the rest was history.
Now stuart’s story crosses paths with cronk jim.
The legendary cronk gym in detroit in 1971, when he brought his half brother there to [ Music, ] um train and after some time he became an assistant coach out of the gym.
Now he trained several several of america’s top amateur prospects.
Before turning his gaze on the pro scene now, even though his first fighter to win a world title was hillman who knocked out ernesto espana for the for his wba lightweight, strap march, 2nd 1980.
In my personal opinion, the fight that defines manny bar none has to be the legend tommy.
The hitman hurts now.
Tommy was nothing shot with freak of nature, in that he stood at six foot one and in the amateurs he fought at 135 pounds.
I well yeah good luck to anybody getting inside that reach.
Looking like a praying, mantis all finland and virtually no torso to speak of many worked on his this fast footed light-hitting specimen until he is now arguably the most devastating puncher in history.
He is always in that conversation.
People were surprised when deonte wilder came on the scene.
He went as far as what 42 fights.
42 wins, 41 knockouts, but in reality he was just a heavyweight version of tommy hearns except atomic box and well.
Tommy went on to sustain an incredible winning world title um.
Well, in essence, he’s jesus.
He won world titles in five different weight classes and being part of the fab four which gifted history with some of the most epic contests ever actually of all time.
They are so spectacular that they defined a decade and for the first time in several decades the spotlight was taken off of the heavyweight division.
Everybody was talking about this guy.
Are these four and rightfully so? These four uh four of them were still topics of conversation.
Today, four decades later, where they are being compared to the modern day greats and wondering how today’s grace would match up with them, that doesn’t happen.
That doesn’t happen like there’s a progression in history, an evolution of the sport.
These guys are so dominant tommy was so freakish.
It just hasn’t been duplicated or even come close to being duplicated for that matter.
So many continue to work and cultivate other champions like i’ll get this wilfred um benitez aaron pryor, oscar de la hoya, obcar julio cesar kermit citron miguel cotto, chad, dawson, my friend and yours, sid, vanderpool, jermaine, taylor, adonis stevenson, vladimir klitschko lennox, lewis and there’s still more Champions that many more champions that this one man helped cultivate september 24 1994 manny walks into the ring with again another friend of ours, oliver, the atomic bull mccall to square off against the wbc heavyweight champion, lennox lewis, where he was a 7-2 underdog.
Now, whoever gave those odds never informed oliver nor manny um, because oliver won by a spectacular second round knockout, which was the first loss.
The first stoppage in lance lewis’s illustrious career, something occurred in the mccall camp, like literally right after that fight, and there was a parting way between manny and oliver mccall, but okay, now february 7th 1997.
There was a long awaited rematch between lennox lewis and oliver mccall, but this time manny is in lennox’s corner walking into the ring.
Let us walk away with a fifth round: knockout now actually post the fight with lex uh, with mccall lewis had manny in his corner.
For the rest of his career post, the first fight, it’s almost as if he pinched them, they finished off their career with a stellar record of 16 wins one loss, one draw and keep in mind one that one draw was arguably one of the worst robberies in Boxing history and i did a a previous episode on it, explaining how bad that fight between lance lewis and evander holyfield won actually was after and not until lennox retired in 2004, and with like’s blessing he actually asked lennox and told him that he wanted to train.
Vladimir klitschko and lex gave his blessing so that campaign started manny picked up right where he left off.
With lennox and vladimir won.
Fought 17 fights won seventeen fights until manny’s death.
This coach knew how to win.
Their partnership ended due to manny’s battle with colon cancer and eventual death october 25th.
2012.
.
Now ken hershman um president of hbo sports, where stewart had worked as a commentator since 2001, released a statement saying there’s no adequate words to describe the enormous degree of sadness and loss.
We at hbo sports, with the tragic loss of manny stewart for more than a decade.
Manny has manny, was a respected colleague who taught us so much not only about the sweet science, but also about friendship and loyalty.
His energy, his enthusiasm and bright smile were a constant presence.
The ten bell do not seem enough to mourn his passing.
His contribution to the sport hbo will never be forgotten.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
I genuinely don’t know if it could be surmised.
Any better um he was a juggernaut of a human being, to say the least, and he also was very much a figure in the world of philanthropy.
In detroit um, several different um, several different charities.
He would donate to and be affiliated with.
He had a love affair for royals voices in mansions, but again equally philanthropy.
He was a stellar person inside the ring and i met him once at the funeral of uh, a friend and coach barney beam.
He was actually lex lewis’s, amateur coach and it’s just a just a down to earth, not overly quiet but down to earth guy, who i just remember him like trying to measure me up with linux, i’m bigger than lex so he’s like yeah, you busy like yeah.
I think i am he he was a spectacular man and he will not be forgotten anytime soon.
Now, with that, that’s my show.
That’S my episode.

It’S your boy! Bola and that’s the scoop, you certainly picked the polar opposite of teddy afflicted.
Manny stewart seems like a gentleman uh in every respect and i’m sure teddy atlas has moments of gentleman-ish too, but no so there you go polar opposites.
Uh emanuel stewart is a candidate for st, oh, fair enough.
Man, that’s uh, that’s pretty cool like that.
Guy must have had some secret sauce.
He uh.
He must have known uh how to do it.
Yeah, because you had you had last night, teddy atlas, yelling screaming and going a bit mad, berserk and, and this fellow manny stewart just seems to know what he’s doing goes about his business trains them right.
It’S something that i questioned is how do you keep superstars? In line they’re, the superstar you’re going to go off and tell them to do something.
They’Ll just say you know, hope you’re for it like don’t but well teddy.
Had his methods, you’ll, put a gun to your head um, but emmanuel was the polar opposite.
I remember hearing a story about how emanuel hated hated evander holyfield training, with vander holyfield one of his many fighters.
Um felt that evander holyfield was arguably one of the laziest fighters.
He ever had to the point where manny would pick him up and go for a run with him and we run with evander.
I much like you like from a layman’s standpoint.
I was always on the impression that evander was like one of the most hardest working um heavyweights of all time, like at the end of the day.
He is like, i can’t think of another heavyweight that oh, maybe chris bird, that put on weight in between fights, because he naturally was not that big, a man.
So i just assumed that his work ethic had to be something out of this world and yet and yet
