Hello boxing fight fans around the world welcome to yet another episode of nail the deal featuring neil the deal himself here on talk and fight and uh.
The boxing world is dying to hear what you’ve got to say tonight, because we’re going to wrap up our series of mexican fighters with one of the best uh, certainly one that i’m enjoying these days he’s he’s doing it all with his fists right.
That’S absolutely right! Graham nice, to see you again thanks for having me out, i really appreciate it how you doing guys it’s friday.
Hopefully you guys are gon na.
Have a nice weekend we’re gon na uh we’re gon na talk about probably the most well-known boxer in the world and uh.
He is mexican so that uh, that’s! Why we’re gon na talk about him today? Uh graham we’re gon na talk about uh, canelo, alvarez, canelo alvarez, i’m sure everybody out there has heard his name.
You know yes, sir yeah, everybody sort of we’ve all heard of canelo and uh and the in the great fights that he’s been uh displaying over the last 15 years or so, but he’s really come into his own.
In the last i would say six seven years and he’s really stepped it up a notch to the point where he is now ranked the best number one ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world, so that in itself is, is an unbelievable accomplishment.
Mr canelo, congratulations.
That is amazing to be uh to be given that kind of uh an award so to speak, uh pound for pound best in the world that it doesn’t get much better than that.
So we’re gon na go through a lot of stuff about uh canelo.
Today, uh some stuff that i was uh looking into in some of his fights, obviously guys if you uh, haven’t seen canelo fight, i suggest you guys go to youtube.
Any of his fights are action-packed.
He is one heck of a fighter: hey graham like he is he’s a he’s, a real whirlwind, a tornado type guy.
You know what i mean yeah he’s amazing.
I like him, yeah he’s amazing.
I really like him too.
So we’re going to go over all this stuff here, so his nickname is uh.
Canelo is his nickname funny enough and canelo in mexican, i believe, means cinnamon.
So cinnamon is probably uh talking about the color of his hair right because he’s a red-haired guy.
They call him canelo, which is cinnamon and mexican so that just stuck with him his real name.
Full name is santos, saul, alvarez, baragon, baragan uh, and he goes by canelo alvarez.
He was born in guadalajara, jalisco, mexico.
He was born july 18, 1990 july 18th.
Is a great day in my life that was the same day.
My father was born july 18th, so there you go, and that makes him 30 years old uh this year.
No, i guess he’d be 31 this year, so okay, right, uh, right, 90 yeah.
So he’s 30 years old presently he’s gon na he’s moving up like we all are so uh his career he’s had a great career.
I didn’t realize it was this long to be honest with you.
I i’ve been watching him for probably 10 years, but i i didn’t realize he’s actually been around longer than that, so his career started in 2005 and he is still fighting presently right now, so he has a 16-year career already, which is uh, which is amazing.
You know, 16 years being a pro fighter is, is not easy, especially at the level that he uh competes at his his compete level is pretty much he’s the best in the world at what he does.
So anybody he’s fighting is is they’re all coming after him.
So he’s at the top of the mountain right now and uh, everybody seems to want to get a piece of him, but he’s fought in uh he’s fought in a bunch of weight divisions.
He fought in the welterweight division.
He started the welterweight, he went to light middle, then he went to middleweight super middleweight and light heavyweight, so he’s been in six divisions.
Uh, amazingly enough, graham welterweight to light heavyweight is a huge difference, something like 35 pounds and apparently uh.
Even when he was younger in his amateur days.
He was having problems.
He even went down to uh light welterweight at 140 pounds.
So he’s he’s got he’s put on a lot of muscle.
I guess and he’s got a lot bigger, obviously, and and uh i mean we’re gon na go over a quick stat here in a minute, that’ll that’ll.
Just let you know what that’s all about.
So, in a nutshell, he’s he’s really known, graham for his fantastic counterpunching.
If you’ve ever watched him fight, he has amazing head movement and uh great body movement.
He really moves, you know he really up and down and all around and he ducks and bobs and weaves.
He does all kinds of crazy stuff, and yet he can throw punches with both hands from any position at any time with power, uh he’s a fantastic body.
Puncher.
Have you ever watched his body punching gram? It’S unbelievable, like he takes guys out with body punches literally he’s.
He hits that hard for uh for a guy.
You know that size but uh, like i say he he’s pretty much an all-around fighter he’s got speed.
He’S got power in both hands.
He’S great head movement he’s he’s he’s aggressive in the ring.
He does all the right things and that’s.
Why he’s at the top of the heap and being a mexican fighter? You know he’s got the heart, you know he’s got the heart and he’s got the uh.
The upbringing too uh we’ll go over that in a little bit here, so he was born actually in the outskirts of guadalajara and then his his family moved to their current uh house now, which is a farm, so he grew up on a farm.
We all know about farms, you work on a farm when you’re a kid.
It makes you pretty tough.
You know, farm farming is a hard way to make a living, so he grew up on the farm and he loves to ride horses apparently, and he still does he loves to ride horses he’s been given gifts, horses as gifts and different stuff of that sort.
So he he really, he he loves animals, obviously, and he really likes riding horses.
That was pretty cool, he’s the youngest funny enough, graham he’s the youngest of eight children.
So he has um six brothers and a sister and all six of his brothers are boxers.
They’Re.
All boxers i didn’t know all six of them were boxers.
I knew of a couple of his brothers, but then i’m like all six of them right.
So i’ve heard of ramon alvarez, ricardo alvarez and rigoberto alvarez and uh rigoberto was an interim wbc uh champion at one time.
So excuse me they do have that in their in their family in their family tree.
So i mean he was the youngest imagine being picked on by all those brothers and they’re all bosses.
No, you know obviously he’s uh, he was getting picked on and he just he like.
He always says he’s not scared of anybody, and this is like you know this, probably because his brothers just kind of beat the crap out of him, since he was a real young lad, and that was that right.
So he just got tougher and tougher and tougher and tougher and look where he is now he’s at the top of the heap.
So he started boxing at 13 years old after seeing his brother rigoberto in a pro fight.
So he really looked up to his oldest brother.
There rigoberto.
He really.
He really looked up to him and that’s why he started fighting because he just saw his brother do anything.
You know pro and hey.
I can do that so uh in 2004.
He went to the mexican junior national championships where he won a silver medal in 2004, as an amateur and in 2005 at the same junior mexican national championships.
He won the gold medal and they were in the welterweight division, so he he was doing pretty well right off the hop you know he won some some medals for his first country and uh, and then he started into his amateur career so we’ll go over his Amateur totals now he had a total amateur uh fights, total fights was 46 uh, 46 fights of which he had 44 wins.
He only had 12 kos out of those 44 wins and he had two losses.
So i guess you know being a youngster, he didn’t have a lot of power yet, but he sure he sure made up for that uh moving forward.
If you know what i mean so he’s uh he’s trained by his father and uh and eddie reynoso and eddie reynoso’s, father cheapo, so they’ve been actually training him, since he was 13 years old.
Graham they are still the trainers, his trainers, so eddie reynoso’s.
One of the world-renowned uh trainers he he presently also trains, ryan, garcia, oscar valdez and um andy ruiz jr.
So he’s he’s our you know, i mean and canelo so like you know, they’re doing something right.
I know that uh, the father, they call him cheapo.
He uh he’s he’s the one: that’s kind of uh uh taught everybody the craft so to speak, and he taught his son and his son’s now teaching the guys and – and they just he’s he’s creating world champions every every time out.
So he’s got to be doing something right, uh, so renault, so funny enough said too that um in an interview a couple of years ago that there were 10 fights that he had as a as an amateur or even pro.
I think maybe it was pro it was pro.
He had 10 more fights than are documented because when he was really young, when he started at 15, they were fighting like chicken coops and the back of like uh vegetable farmers, markets and like out in the street.
Basically, they were just making up stuff, but apparently he knocked out uh all 10 opponents in those fights that were never documented.
So it’s interesting how i guess they he.
He basically said they don’t even really care right.
They don’t they don’t really care that it’s documented or not.
They just know that that happened, so he was just making a statement that he does.
He does have x amount of pro fights, but he really has more so that happens once in a while, as we know, graham it just you know, because they’re fighting and there’s just no documentation of these fights so uh in these uh in these situations.
So he said basically, you know this this, this kid has got uh, say 58 fights under his belt, but he really has 68 so to speak and he knocked them all out.
So in his first i know that in his first uh 19 months of being pro, he actually knocked out 11 of his first 13 opponents, all right in 19 months.
So he was fighting quite a bit right off the hop as a young kid and all the guys he was knocking out in his very early career were older than him.
So he was fighting guys that were always older than him and he was winning so uh.
They obviously knew right away that they had a special prodigy on their hands here and this this kid could be something something else which he has become.
There’S an interesting uh, stat kind of thing that i saw here june 28 2008.
He uh he made history with his family.
They had a boxing match in their hometown, and this is the only time in history where all six brothers fought on the same card that night with him, so the whole family was on the card.
Unfortunately, apparently three three of his brothers lost and four and the four one.
So he was one of the winners, so three of his brothers lost and three of his brothers one, you know and those were those were their pro debuts in 2008.
So it’s kind of interesting to know that right, six, you know when brothers on the same fight card right.
It’S never happened in the history of boxing, so i thought that was kind of cool.
So in october 2018 uh he signed a five-year 375 million dollar deal with the zone uh in his next 11 fights, so his 11 fights would be broadcast in the us and uh.
There he’s averaging 35 million dollars per fight, graham, like that’s his average, like 35 million, not including pay-per-views or whatever else, just his salary per fight on uh on the zone.
So he’s uh he’s doing pretty well for himself now and that’s fire inspiring a lot of mexicans.
Well, for sure i mean that’s uh, that’s a lot of ding dong.
You know to be uh to be acquiring at any time right and it’s only a five-year deal.
So he could probably go past that you know and and sign another deal but uh.
That would just be ridiculous if he, if he continues doing what he’s doing and going undefeated and beating everybody, then who knows what’s going to happen on his next contract? That comes up or whoever streaming service decides; they want to uh.
They don’t want to hire him.
So in 2019 he became a four division world champion, all right, which is an amazing feat in itself, four different divisions world champion and he joined a very elite bunch of guys, uh thomas thomas hearns, sugar, ray leonard and mike mccallum, as the only former middleweight champions In history to win a light heavyweight championship belt, so that was pretty interesting and him and hearns are the only fighters in the history to start off their careers in the welterweight division and win a light heavyweight divisional title.
So that’s pretty amazing right going from welterweight to light heavyweight, you know and winning titles all the way up.
So him and hearns are the only ones that have done it, starting in the welterweight division 2019.
He was named fighter of the year pretty much across the board.
Espn box rack ring magazine.
Everybody had him as fighter of the year and uh, apparently this year very soon, coming up.
Uh may 8, 2021 in arlington, texas, a t and t stadium, which i believe is the dallas cowboys stadium.
Is it not the 18t stadium, i’m pretty sure yeah, so he’s going to be fighting uh billy, joe saunders, may 8th on the zone and that’s going to be for the wbo uh well billy joe saunders is the wbo uh title holder and uh, so that title Is gon na go up with canelo’s title, so it’s gon na be a big big situation.
Big fight, uh, billy, joel saunders, is by no means a pushover, he’s a fantastic fighter in his own right and i think it’s going to be a one of those epic.
Epic battles, you know those guys are they’ve, been really kind of at each other’s.
You know they’ve been kind of back and forth back and forth for about a year now, uh, and so finally they got it signed and it’s it’s gon na go down so guys keep your eyes peeled.
Um may 8th at 8 p.
m.
On a dazon we will see uh canelo alvarez versus billy, joe saunders, so i’m looking forward to that now, just another quick tidbit about that this weekend, graham uh may uh sorry march uh, 20th march 20th, uh we’re gon na have a big fight uh on uh Dazn as well at 8 p.
m, and that’s going to be virgil, ortiz jr versus maurice hooker.
That is the headline, and that should be a barn burner of a that should be another one.
I mean ortiz jr.
We did did segments on uh virgil and he’s uh undefeated he’s 16-0 with 16 knockouts and maurice hooker is 27 and one with like 19 or 20 knockouts.
So this should be and they’re they’re both from houston texas.
So it’s it’s kind of like a battle of who’s better in in that city or something i don’t know right.
It’S like you know it’s one of those one of those deals, so i think it’s going to be a really exciting fight.
You guys might want to watch it and i’m definitely going to be watching.
That’S for sure yeah.
So we’ll talk a little more about canelo, hey! I just wanted to pop that in about the fight uh, he is uh he’s presently engaged canelo and he has four children.
He has three daughters and a son and uh he’s a boxing promoter in mexico, which is interesting, so he’s been promoting uh through canelo productions.
Boxers in mexico for uh like a number of years now and uh, maybe four five six years and he represents over 40 mexican boxers.
You know so uh he’s really giving back to the mexican boxing community down there and uh and promoting fights and he’s doing a lot of stuff within within boxing that you know you don’t really hear a lot about, but obviously he’s um he’s really he’s really decided To uh to put his money and uh and all that kind of stuff together to try to help the younger ones get better and that’s fantastic again.
The humanitarianism of that is great.
I really like to see he’s giving back and he’s he’s still um what we got here.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, um yeah! So he’s i’m just looking at one of these comments here: uh yeah, so he’s he’s he’s been giving back to to his community and he’s been doing it like all the time.
So i got ta got ta, say good for him and that’s gon na help.
The uh keep the mexican boxers at the top of their game going forward, because if you had a guy like him, you know helping you out that that would be great, so we’ll go over his notable fights now quick.
Any of his fights are amazing, guys check them all out.
He’S gon na he’s, like i say he’s one of he could go down as one of the best of all time.
No doubt about it, i i the fights that i see him he’s amazing, so uh.
He fought out.
We all know that canelo versus a golovkin golovkin.
He fought him twice, so you guys check out the golovkin fights.
Those are just epic battles uh.
He fought miguel cotto, which was a fantastic fight.
Canelo versus floyd, mayweather jr.
Another amazing fight a little bit kind of got lucky there.
I think i watched it and you know i don’t know.
I thought canelo won that one but anyways and uh another one that i watched was canelo versus amir khan, where uh canelo pretty much uh did a job on him.
There’S all kinds of fights man he’s fought, so many guys at all the top of their game.
Now he’s been on a number of pay-per-views too hey, graham, as we all know, he’s been on a ton of pay-per-view, so he’s got over.
Eight million buys on uh pay-per-view and his uh he’s brought in over 600 million dollars just in pay-per-view uh total sales.
So he’s a very popular individual around the world and uh well deserve it.
I mean he he goes out he’s an entertainer he’s he’s at the top of his game and – and i love watching him up i’ll pay any time to watch canelo, no problem.
You know what i mean that that’s a no-brainer, so last little thing we’ll go over.
Is the titles that he’s acquired over his career uh and the the list is pretty long it’s longer than i would have thought, but we’re gon na go through it and uh check this one out for uh for titles, one since uh, since he was since he Started so in 2007 he won the gelasco welterweight title, which must have been in his hometown 2008.
He won the wba fertacentero welterweight title, which is another mexican title.
I understand in 2008 2009 he won the nabf welterweight title and the wbo latino welterweight title 2009.
He won the wbc youth welterweight title 2010.
He won the wbc silver light, middleweight title 2013.
He won the wba light middleweight title 2016.
.
Oh sorry, 2015.
He won ring magazine and wbc middleweight title 2016.
He won the uh wbo light middleweight title 2018.
He won the wba super middleweight title 2019.
He won the ibf middleweight title 2019.
He won the wbo light heavyweight title and in 2021 here because obviously last year was a bit of a mess.
Uh he’ll be defending his wba wbc and ring magazine super middleweight title and vying for that.
Wbo super middleweight uh title that he’s trying to take off billy joe saunders on may 8th on uh on uh the zone.
So i’m going to be watching that fight.
That’S a heck of a uh title, runny graham 2007 to present he’s been he’s been fighting like a like an absolute like every year, he’s just winning titles, so i got ta say right now.
I don’t see anybody out there.
That’S uh! That’S gon na really uh dethrone him.
I guess he’s gon na have some tough fights coming up, but i think he can pull through.
That’S just my opinion.
I’M gon na take him to win these fights and uh.
Let’S just let’s just guys.
Just keep your eyes out for canelo and uh and check him out on youtube, because any of his fights are fantastic.
You’Ll love them all.
So, thanks again for coming out, really appreciate it and uh, hopefully we’ll see on monday.
Have yourselves a good weekend.
Graham.
Have yourselves a good have yourself a good weekend and uh? I guess we’ll see on monday.
Thank you, yeah.
You will and uh.
I just want to say i’m agreeing with our commentators who are pouring in the comments.
I i agree once uh once canal retires.
I think his legacy will surpass the passes.
I really do wow yeah.
I just saw that one, that’s interesting that somebody piped in like that, because that’s some pretty big shoes to fill really.
You know julia cesar chavez is i mean we talked about him yesterday and we’ve talked about him before i mean 89-0 or you know something you know just crazy, so yeah once his career is over that once he retires he he will.
I think that uh that um that listener there that made the nice comment there yeah i would i would agree he could be in that league easily.
You know, i don’t know if he’s going to reach the 100 fight mark, because he is already 30 years old.
I mean that’s a pretty big stretch, but um he’s definitely good for probably another uh, probably 10 20 fights.
I would think 15 anyways, so we’ll be we’ll be all looking forward to seeing him in the future, because he’s amazing yep he is it’s gon na, be a great fight uh on the eighth down in arlington and uh, we’re all looking forward to it.
It’S it’s he’s, got ta, take care of business down there with billy joe saunders and uh, but before that we’ve got some other fights come up this weekend, we’ll be tuning in to those as well.
As you say, virgil ortiz is a big fight fighter that we’ve been uh commenting a lot about as well so anyway, some great fights coming up and uh we’re keeping our eye on these mexicans, as well as the spanish americans and and the filipinos who have a Spanish heritage too so wowie we’ve been going around the world for the past couple of weeks and uh, it’s been a fun trip.
Uh, i’m looking forward to seeing what you have lined up next week.
I’M sure viewers do as well.
Oh yeah, i’m looking forward to it too, graham uh, so yeah, that’s kind of a secret, but we’ll uh, we’ll let you know on monday, where we’re going uh around the world to our next destination.
Um uh with that fight, i’m just gon na make another quick comment about the fight on the 20th here with uh virgil, otis, jr and uh, maurice hooker, the undercard looks really good as well.
There is a co-main event and it is a title fight.
It is a woman’s wbc straw, weight, title fight, which is interesting, so i’m gon na be really looking forward to watching that and there’s a there’s, a big heavyweight fight, uh earlier on in the card that i’m looking forward to seeing.
So i think the whole card is going to be really good if you uh, if you guys, are out there and are interested you, you know check it out, like i said it’s on to zone 8 p.
m and i’ll be watching.
I i won’t miss that one.
That’S for sure, so you guys have yourself a great weekend, we’ll talk to you on monday, thanks for coming out, really appreciate it.
Take care of yourselves rock and roll, we’ll see you on monday, thanks graham take care thanks.
Thank you.
