Hello boxing fans around the world, thank you for joining us on.
Yet another great episode coming up of knuckle up, and why will it be great because we have a special guest on talk and fight? Yes, sir mike has lined up yet another interview with yet another great fighter and mike i’ll leave it up to you to introduce him definitely fight fans around the world.
Knucklehead fans, thanks for tuning in today, we have with us brian norman jr, 20-0 17 knockouts.
The assassin 2 20 years old out of atlanta georgia has taken the time out of his busy schedule to stop by and have this wonderful interview with us.
So you know what we’re going to get right to it, because i know he’s a busy man.
I know he’s you know, got training in the way.
You know all over the place, he’s he’s busy man and we’re stretching him as much as we can to get him here.
So, let’s get him in here and start this interview, graham we’re going to knock you out and uh bring him in yeah.
I’M back to the match.
Yeah definitely enjoy that fight there, brian.
How are you man how’s it going everything’s all right.
You know just like you just said: working and everything yeah man you’re, very you’re, very busy man.
I know you got some fights coming up right in again, just wait for the next fight nice, nice excellent, so um, let’s uh, let’s dive into it um.
So what did you start boxing at and how did you get into it? Uh the whole thing i started.
Can i get started he so your father, your father, was a boxer, and this is one of your big inspirations want to be just like dad get in the ring with him.
What is um? What does he think about? Alderman does does.
Does he? Does he really push you and really, you know uh back you behind, but by your training and everything, because he is your trainer as well correct.
You want to take the family name and make it great.
So you started boxing at seven um, so your amateur career, i believe i think you had something like 140 wins in your amateur career uh.
What what age did you start? Did you start competing as an amateur uh? I started when i was seven and uh.
I turned eight, i started fighting and if i don’t know how many more fights i won or anything, i don’t have with that many fights, as as a youth um did you find it hard to um juggle your academics and and the sport of boxing was.
It was it hard to do that or no not about what i mean.
It’S just like doing football.
Anything like that.
You know you do school first, as soon as you go home, go straight to the gym, then so you’re saying that as long as you can structure your life properly, it’s easy to balance both boxing and and you know, in school um.
Do you do any other sort of you know extracurricular activities outside of boxing or is it just too much uh? You don’t have enough time, that’s about it, okay, so so after high school, all that was done uh then you decided to go pro right.
You’Ve been a pro since 2018 yeah, i’m turning 17.
.
I think it was my 17th birthday, my manager cameron duncan he called us.
He said you want to go pro.
We talked about it for a minute.
He finally said yes and i think january of 2018 january 25th.
No, can you can you run us? Can you run us through the um, the excitement and the nerves and everything uh when you, when you walked into the ring for that first fight and how you calmed yourself down? Oh yeah? Well, you did.
You did finish that one in the first round, with the tko right um, so with with with the hype of the fans and everything um today, with all the things that’s going around, you know the world with the pandemic, and everything does that do.
Do you think that affects fighters with you know not having the fan base there and it being more quiet, because a lot of people do feed off the energy of the crowd? And you know when you start getting on a roll and you start going and you know the flow is going and the fans are cheering you on.
Do you find it different fighting with a fan base and without a fan base? Now i don’t have to say that depends on the type of fighters like if you’re a fighter, okay, okay um, who are the fighters that you look up to uh some idols of yours um when you were growing up in the sport young? Who did you look up to who did you wan na? Who did you wan na? You know image yourself after other than your father, who was also a boxer.
My five are ali mike tyson roy jones, the kings baby, the kings.
That’S it that’s it and soon to be brian, norman, jr right, the king, yeah honestly, i love all those guys as well man, i’m a big fan of everybody that you mentioned.
They are the kings of boxing and you know what you’ll probably be a king of boxing one day yourself.
You know you got a great record man honestly.
I love watching fighters like you, men that don’t leave it in the judge’s hands.
That’S what we do on this show man, i’m always i’m always talking about the hungry, the young, the undefeated.
You know the future of the sport, and you know what you are.
You are on the path definitely to become.
You know one of these one of these guys these legends men, you got this great record.
You got great management team behind you um.
What gym do you currently train at right now, um? Are there a lot of fighters out of there or is it just a small like tight-knit everybody pretty much so the boxing scene in atlanta has gotten big over the last couple of years, because i know i know a few years back.
It wasn’t like it was hard because it was a very small community of boxing in atlanta and now it’s starting to blow up.
So you find you find now it’s it’s a lot better than it was five years ago, yeah, okay, so out of um out of out of your wonderful career, all your knockouts! What um? What’S your favorite one? What’S your favorite knockout of your career to date, uh! It’S wow [, Music ], you’ve had 20 fights under your more than 20 fights.
Now under your belt and honestly you’re young in the game.
You know a lot of people.
A lot of people feel that you know you’re rushing right, but i don’t think so man.
I think i think that you know your team is doing it the right way.
You know you’re, taking your time, you’re methodically planning your route to to a championship.
Eventually um, i you know i’ve read i’ve read some things about you talking about it um.
Where do you, you know what what are your short term goals for, say like the next six months to a year from now? Where, where do you see yourself being well, it’s this so yeah, you guys got it planned out perfectly.
Then you know, you know exactly where you’re going and know exactly how you’re going to get there so in in in your career.
So far i know you’ve probably stepped in the ring and maybe face somebody.
That’S you know faster than you or hits harder than you.
How do you deal with that as a as an opponent? If they got one thing, that’s better than me, i will take that away from you.
That’S being well is on everything.
So that’s my whole thing, i’m not one division.
I just look at that.
I have to find that i believe if i have to do everything i do you do have wonderful you honestly, you do have wonderful defense.
I do enjoy watching these guys try to hit you it’s uh, it’s actually incredible man.
The way you can just you know, you know, slip those punches man and and then just retaliate with such with such force and such speed like i’ve seen clips of you, man and it looks like you’re doing burnouts on a heavy bag, and you got this guy, Like banged against the ropes – and you know, and it’s just the punches are so fast, you know like how how do you, how do you improve speed, as as a boxer like um, to get to get to the level that you’re at right now, because honestly, fight Fans around the world check him out check out his clips man.
This guy is fast when i’m telling you hands.
How do you improve to get to the point that you’re at right now with that speed technique technique? Some people try to put it real long and you’re not going to take away from the speed of it, and so now i guess i guess that just comes with experience and and probably natural talents as well.
Considering you know you, you are your father’s son and your father was a pro and now you’re a pro um.
Let me ask you: does he get jealous of you of your uh of your of your success right now, he’s living through you right he’s living vicariously through you at this point before i got to ask you this, have you and your dad ever sparred in the Ring [ Laughter, ] man, that’s very good, um long-term goals.
What like, where? What do you see like? What do you want to accomplish at the end of this career? And you hang up your gloves and you know, like you’re, ready to leave the sport ready to retire.
What do you want to be known for what are the long-term goals you you want to achieve in your professional career? Well, i want to be on top of the world.
I want to be the kobe bryant of boston.
Pretty much.
I want to go 140 to maybe um.
Definitely, definitely, okay, so yeah.
You know you’re not afraid, you’re ready to take any fight any time.
You don’t care you just that’s it.
You want to be known as the man, the kobe bryant of of boxing.
You know, honestly, it’s in your hands.
It’S in your management team hands.
You know, and it could it could be a possibility you’re on your way there, man you’ve got a great start to your career already um.
Can you describe out of out of your all your wins right now, your worst performance and what you did to improve on that uh? I don’t know my worst performance, but i just didn’t look good.
I wanted to look up whatever when you knock somebody out.
Do you get a sense of accomplishment like after you’ve trained so hard you step in that ring and you get in there and say you know you dust him in the first round and you know he’s sleeping on the mat across from you describe the feeling that Comes over you, i it so so saying that you know when you train so hard, and that happens it’s it’s kind of almost like a disappointment, because you’ve worked so hard.
Runners run us through what it’s like when you, when you enter a training camp like how many weeks is, is usually your fight camp uh.
What is your day-to-day routine like the time you get up time to go to bed and what are your eating habits like off the top uh pretty much fish chicken chicken breasts, get that, and that must be part of it, sometimes big.
If i want it but uh for rice brown rice, so you don’t really do a training camp you’re, just like always in training camp, so so pretty much pretty much you’re ready to fight tomorrow.
If you get a call, so always stay ready.
So that’s the key to it that that’s that’s how you rack up, i guess 20 or you know over 20 fights right now.
That’S that’s how you rack that up is just stay.
Hungry, stay busy, stay, ready, um! Speaking of that, what um? What is the shortest? The shortest amount of time that you’ve taken a fight on uh, i have to say honestly, i’m hoping we do a show on sundays.
It’S the knuckle up knockout of the week.
Definitely hopefully one of your next fights man we’re going to get to uh we’re gon na get to put you on there, man, so you know we can.
We can award you that word man, because, honestly, yes, you are a knockout artist.
I love it man.
It’S great um, so that being said uh, so your next fight, you, you don’t know exactly when that’s gon na happen, uh you just you’re, just staying ready, staying busy uh.
What is it so? What kind of like recovery time do you usually take after after a fight? Do you like you’re, just right back in the gym? You, don’t you don’t take like a week off or rest or anything? Just you stick straight to it.
I mean i feel, like i shouldn’t have sponsored pretty much like.
If i started, i mean it depends on how i feel you just do work man, that’s it um.
What are some of the greatest challenges that you faced in your career today? Some of the greatest challenges: um, okay, okay, you don’t do you don’t work any like.
I’Ve talked to a lot of young young pro fighters right now.
Uh i’ve interviewed a bunch, and you know some of these guys actually work full-time jobs at the same time as balancing their boxing career.
Are you in that boat? Do you do you work a full-time job as well or a part-time job? On top of balancing your pro career, guys who are watching out there fighters who’ve been on the show, listen to brian norman jr man? It’S all about uber eats guys, that’s how you balance, work and play and fighting man.
That’S amazing, um.
If okay dream fight living or dead, who would it be yeah? Okay, okay, that would be the dream: fight, okay, who’s, your dream, opponent: who would you who would you like to fight living or dead today? Also, i believe, he’s what the oldest oldest champion ever too right.
All the all, this kind of hold them up.
Yeah! That’S you know what that’s the first.
That’S the first time.
I’Ve asked that question that somebody’s actually told me pronoun whitaker, nobody’s ever rest in peace to marvin hagler man, boxing lost you know: boxie lost uh, a really a really big asset to him, and you know it was a very sad day, but definitely he is a Beast man he’s he’s a truck.
He hits hard just like you, you know what that would be an epic battle and i’d definitely like to see that man that would be awesome to watch.
That would definitely be awesome to watch um.
That being said, um.
What do you uh? What do you would you rather be loved or feared in your career? Oh respect, i want to be respected.
That’S my suspected! Okay, okay, that’s that’s a new one.
That’S the new one! I’Ve always asked lover.
You love me! You hate me that don’t matter that’s my main thing, you know the words of a champion right there, man honestly thank you for taking all the time out and you know like and coming on here.
I know you’re really really busy and everything um.
You know.
I don’t want to keep you too much longer.
Definitely i want to see you in your next fight.
Please let me know when it’s going to happen.
Uh we’ll definitely be uh.
Cheering you on from the talk and fight family on knuckle up.
Hopefully you come through with a wonderful knockout, so uh we can.
You know, award you this sunday knockout award that uh that that we’ve we’ve grown to know and love.
Now, here at the talking fight family um, i’m going to ask you.
I guess one more question uh.
What do you want to be remembered for inside the ring and outside the ring when it’s over that’s the hardest working fight? I pushed, and i literally could not do more than what i have done in my career, like i literally gave it my all, so you let okay, so you want to be known for leaving it all out there and being the best that you could have been And you know what you’re a humble man you know thank you for coming on man.
I don’t want to keep you too much longer.
Definitely let us know when you’re, when you’re going to be fighting again guys.
I got him in here, brian norman jr.
