Hello there talking fight fans, welcome once again to another exciting episode of the scoop featuring champ bolerae, who is now on part three of his trilogy and not a famous fight uh rivalry.
But in fact a trilogy of robberies.
I might say trilogy of robberies well played well put for one man, one man wow this.
It was yet again another classic robbery of the man known as sweepy um.
This was a highly anticipated fight that literally took place almost a decade, or it took people almost a decade to bring it to the people um where, for the first time in history, the top two candidates for the ring magazine pound for pound uh division category were Facing off against each other name is bola.
Raymond hold wally.
This is the scoop march.
6Th pernille whitaker just beat buddy mcgirt and another defense of his ibf light.
Welterweight title prior to even stepping into the ring pernell had already had another fight, signed, sealed and delivered for later on that year, against none other than the man himself.
The legendary julio cesar chavez.
Now, in the event that panel had lost to buddy mcgirt, this fight was still going to go on the the the fight public had been waiting for this.
For that long they were not to be denied both well pernell was the junior welterweight or light welterweight ibf champion and chavez was the light welterweight wbc champion.
So, in the event that pernell had lost to buddy mcgirt at welterweight, that’s the other thing that fight was at welterweight.
Oh sorry, no! That fight was at junior welterweight, but if he had lost that, no, no sorry the fight was at welterweight.
Hence why he wouldn’t have lost his title.
The fight would have been still on at junior welterweight, because the boxing public wanted to see this clash for so long, but pernell was victorious, so the fight was not welterweight for the vacant wbc title now.
This was another step up for chavez in his illustrious career and when i say illustrious wow pernell no slouch great career going into this fight, 32 wins one loss, controversial loss, the show i did yesterday, julia julio cesar chavez was walking into the ring with a record Of 87 wins and zero losses, wow who’s, this mayweather guy yeah 87 wins no losses.
Was a demon in three different weight classes already going up into his fourth september 10th 1993 round, one saw shabbos doing what he does forcing the fight coming forward.
With a great deal of head movement and uh, while pernell did what he did and continuously walking backwards, pop shotting out boxing chavez with his jab chavez couldn’t find pernell with a bloodhound.
Okay – and this is again, the legendary round two saw pernell, actually stopped and stopped and stood his ground against shadows, which was also rather unheard of and attempted to fight the man side and found a great deal of success.
Now he opened up a lot more with bigger combinations and made chavez, miss a lot chavez missing at close range.
This doesn’t this does not happen.
This doesn’t like i said 87 and oh, this doesn’t happen.
Who was this guy? The next two rounds saw pernell getting into his groove.
He pretty much stayed at mid-range and just out boxed him um.
Whenever showers would try to get inside um to exchange with what it would just tie him up spin around cast them away, it was.
It was just simple: this really frustrated chavez now round five started with shadows, putting on putting in some crazy work the the punch output, um and found a great deal of success.
Doing that uh part way through the the fifth round.
His work rate, sort of dipped back to normal and picked up his work right well, actually stayed level but was able to box him for the most part.
But i still think that this is the first round that uh chavez that could have gone into chavez’s way.
Now, the following round: um [ Music ], began with pernell doing what purnell does.
He was coasting along boxing and then and oh yeah, and constantly circling circling to his left to shadows left, which he did it for the whole fight and chavez couldn’t find him could like it’s not like.
He went the other direction ever he just kept circling to shout to pernell’s right.
He just kept moving to his pronouns right, which was ideal because it stiffened um shoves his monster and legendary hook, and he was away from chavez’s cross.
It was just a win-win and shallows never had an answer for it.
The whole fight right, then um this part way through uh, the sixth round um something well in essence.
A tussle went on inside and chavez claimed that he got caught low.
Now he was given some time to clear his head and then they resumed action pernell, getting just a warning.
Well, actually uh joe cortez, the referee saw it as um unintentional, low blow and didn’t do anything.
We didn’t take a point off because it’s unintentional um so be it, give him a warning.
The next three rounds saw pernell, just all box shadows like just on the end.
At the end of the eighth round, uh whitaker just started teeing off on the man’s head.
Like to the best of his ability, that is because was never a huge puncher, but he was swinging and connecting swinging and connecting swinging and, like literally unanswered punches after unanswered, punches after unanswered punches beat him like he was a pinata um, really disrespectful for a legend To begin getting this kind of treatment, but it was uh, it was quite the sight and it solidified to me exactly how great pernell whitaker truly was again.
He was able to do this to shadows.
The ninth round started with pernell winning the outside game easy and the round finished up with chevas exchanging at point-blank range like really going at it, and i feel that he had done enough to uh score the second round that he would have won, and this is Nine round nine that shot his one on my scorecard, the championship, grounds begun and finished.
Much like the rest did pernell outbox chavez.
It was just simply he outboxed him at mid range.
He outboxed him at long range outside range um and whenever he um chavez would manage to get inside pro.
Just tie him up turn around um joe cortez was attempting to be fair.
He did.
I thought he did a fantastic job as a ref in a challenging fight to ref um, in that you have two guys who like to scrap on the inside, but the thing is pernell would just tie him up and if the fight, if he got tied up, He would break him apart, which would be to pronounce um benefit, but if they were letting if their hands were going, if they were actually doing something on the inside, he let the fight go so as to give chavez an opportunity to actually score some much-needed points And yet it was still all pronounced from that point on um, probably through the eleventh round, shall we start to look tired and he never really got his wings back from me from the outside.
Looking in it almost like he just just quit like he was.
He was going through the motions of punching and stuff like that, but he wasn’t.
He wasn’t on ablaze.
He wasn’t confident um, he throughout the whole fight.
He didn’t really use his jab much to set up anything which was really uncommon.
Um he was.
He was known for uh peppering you with the jab and landing a monster cross fall with a monster hook.
Um, he just was pot shotting it for the most part, and it just didn’t prove that successful now round, 12.
pretty much the same thing you’re.
So he you just got a box and, like i said he used lackluster in in his desire to be there, but when the bell rang, they both put their hands up juggling and almost claiming that it was.
It was their day.
It was their day, so al bernstein was doing the color commentary for the for this show.
You know this fight and both out the score to be the exact same, even though we gave um uh chavez different rounds in that we both gave him the fifth round, but he gave him the first round and i gave him the ninth round.
So we both scored at 118 pernell 110 shabbos.
Okay.
Now? What did the three blind mice see? Is the question? Well, you got jack woodruff scoring at 115, 113 whitaker close okay, while mickey and franz martin scored the fight 115 115.
This was seen as a majority draw.
Both fighters got to retain their belts and go on their merry way and continue their careers.
My question is how how how how did how did this happen? How how do you respect anything called order, um? How i truly wonder if public floggings were the antidote to curb these blind mice, would we be getting these many bad decisions? I don’t know, i don’t know public floggings.
I i i’m hoping that the power is upbeat.
I actually consider this as a remedy to the scenario, because i don’t know what what else to make of it.
You have a epidemic going on now it’s with bad with bad officiating, bad.
Judging it’s just i.
I have no idea what they’re watching the washington post sports analyst scored the fight 115 113 pernell, the associated press and news day, both scored it 116 112 pernell sports illustrated and ring magazine, saw this fight 117.
111 pernell.
How do so many educated eyes be wrong at the same time? How how did those three blind mice get to where they were well september, 20th um edition of sports illustrated had a picture of pernell on the front page and with a caption spread out across it.
I just said in cap lovers robbed, i think that spoke volumes.
The now defunct boxing illustrated magazine.
Editor-In-Chief was none other than the boxing historian, uh bert sugar, and he went on so far as to say to tell his subscribers that, in the event that they believe that this fight was a draw not to purchase this issue like honestly, lou duva and many others, Including me thought that this was the work of don king and jose sullivan, the president of the wbc.
He he really loved and wanted to protect um chavez and chavez was don king’s fighter um.
The two judges, mickey van and franz martin, were both wbc fighter judges who were appointed to this fight, specifically by suleiman don king and uh, oh and jack woodruff.
The one judge that saw it for pernell was an american based uh judge, who had nothing to do with the wbc per se.
Now don king and suleman worked tirelessly to have him removed from the panel but um they finally relented and just realized that they already had two of the three in their back pocket.
So therefore pretty much their wish will go.
So jerry roth was a noted and distinguish uh official who was scheduled to ref this fight or to or officiate this fight and chavez’s camp.
Like denounced him so he’ll know you’re you’re not coming on board gee.
Why um and then he was left out.
This was a complete mess.
This and robberies like this give boxing such a bad name and a black guy, and i hope my hope is by keeping the spotlight on decisions like this, that we can make a bad memory in the future.
So um, if you disagree with my findings and all these educated people’s findings like i couldn’t find one person, one other person other than the two of those corrupt uh judges that saw it either as a draw or in favor of um shadows.
This would it.
It was rather blatant, but in the event that you do, please leave a comment down below if you like this show, if you like this episode, please smash the like button and subscribe hammer that notification bell so as you again that you’re wrong on other.
On other fights, it’s your boy bola and that’s the scoop thanks very much uh yeah.
I just feel for this guy, like i said his record when he finished his career was 40 fights.
40 wins.
Sorry, 40 fights.
Sorry 40 wins four losses.
One draw.
I just told you about two of those losses, which are utter robberies and the draw which is an utter robbery.
His one loss was to felix trinidad when he moved up to, i believe, um junior middleweight, where prince was five foot six.
He had no business going that high in weight, he’s going up against gorillas and he went up against a like a punching like an absolute juggernaut in felix trinidad like and he went the distance.
I was like.
I was nothing shy of surprise but come on man like he, he was inhuman, but not to that extent and that’s the only real loss.
That’S the only real loss that i think he had on his record, the the other loss that he had um.
He dislocated his shoulders.
It was his last fight and also his um after the the uh.
What’S we call it the de la hoya fiasco? His life really really went downhill.
He was supposed to have a fight with ike corte, but um.
It didn’t happen because he failed a drug test for cocaine and uh yeah.
Then he got suspended after the suspension.
He went back, got tested again got busted again.
Um then took that felix train that fight got beat took some time off really struggled with this whole cocaine thing went into rehab for a bit came back had that one fight pop to shoulder call to the day finish his career as a coach did rather well And then early last year was killed by a car by a hit and run so he he was amazing, an amazing fighter.
Nothing shy of amazing um, like i can’t almost any other fighter.
I can say we were so like him.
I can’t really think of a fighter like like purnell, i fought like brunel.
He he didn’t have power like i said he couldn’t crack an egg, but he was a living embodiment of what boxing was to touch and not be touched, is what he did in spades.
So um may rest in peace.
Great trilogy, though uh great stories, uh, wonderful, boxer without a doubt and uh sad to see him leave the earth this way, but uh we all got to go sometime.
I guess yeah yeah yeah bottom line.
He had his moment in the sun, that’s for sure wow! Yes, he did.
You know he left.
Quite quite the well.
I uh say impact on history but his mark on history.
