[, Music ] what up taco fight fans thanks for tuning in to today’s episode of knuckle up with mike orr and cedric ben? And today we have a little different story for you: man usually we’re talking about these up and coming hungry and undefeated prospects with good promising.
You know futures ahead of them, but today we’re talking about one that might have fallen off the map and uh.
That’S due to some unfortunate incidents with the police and uh has been got this man jailed for five years, we’re talking about a leem whitfield this promising cruiserweight um.
You know debuted, 2009, 0813 and uh.
His last fight was 2015 uh.
He improved uh.
He had a great record of seven and oh six, knockouts uh before this guy got charged and uh jailed for five years and uh he’s he’s gon na be up for uh up for parole, uh done a sentence uh, i believe, by the end of next year.
So hopefully we can see this guy, maybe bounce back, get back into the ring and uh do what he’s doing you know do what he did best at that time in his life, which was boxing man yeah to see this cruiserweight who’s 7-0 with six knockouts, you Know a promising young fighter at a geneva new york uh out of 360 boxing.
It’S it’s unfortunate that this happens: yeah, yes and uh.
I just want to just uh.
You know just want to say being as a boxing coach for the past um little while past couple of years.
Um i say past couple years was like almost 20 jesus.
Oh, don’t reveal the age yet buddy um.
You know i’ve helped a lot of people that have been in bad situations and helped them stay focused.
That’S one thing that boxing does help.
People get with um is just being disciplined and um.
You know getting to that hard work and most of the time keeping them out of trouble.
Sometimes you know certain life circumstances.
People, you know, find themselves in certain situations that they wish they were not in um, but the only thing that you can do is uh is work your way to a towards the positive.
You know towards the positive you know right now, unfortunately, he’s been locked up in jail, but the only thing he could do is be positive and work hard to get back to where he was uh before he went inside and um boxing’s.
That way, because you know, especially in the states a lot of times, they really punish people.
You know, if you, if you get, you know it’s hard to get a job.
If you have a record and stuff like that, is one of the only the only sports or jobs that you can get that you know you just have to work hard and um, and you can get back to you know, reach your goals where you were before.
So yeah, hopefully no if he doesn’t have a gym to go to he’s, always welcome.
Exactly he’s.
Welcome to come to your gym right, yeah! There you go well elim the hammer whitfield.
You know he was a hard punching aggressive fighter that totally brought the intensity and excitement to the ring, along with an easy, going and happy disposition outside of it.
Unfortunately, we don’t know what happened uh and when why um? You know that easy going disposition that you know he had inside the ring disappeared, but uh whitfield is one of the rare men who understands the value of hard work and how precious the time is for a boxer to develop and apply his and apply his trade Whitfield started going to the gym at the age of eight uh to watch his brother train growing up watching lauren jones jr sugar, shane mosley.
He played football but dreamt of becoming a boxer.
Naturally, by the time he was 12 whitfield decided he was done watching and got into the ring.
He grew up.
He grew into a talented amateur who was once ranked number two in the country as a middleweight and as a professional.
He you know, compiled this record of seven and over six knockouts, and you know with all the talent in the world and an international amateur resume and smarts, both inside and outside of the ring.
This young man was ready to get things done on this big stage and unfortunately uh charges uh landed him in prison.
The one thing i could say is um.
Obviously nobody wants to go to prison.
One of the the best comeback stories that that there probably is is uh bernard hopkins, who actually started his career.
He went to uh jail when he was 19 years old and uh.
They don’t allow boxing and jails anymore, but at the time there was a they allowed boxing and jails, and there was a coach there and that’s where he actually started boxing for so he boxed every single day for five years came out and then turned pro yeah Um and then it was just obviously the history history from there um so and it was for five years too, and you said mr ellis uh, mr whitfield is inside for a little bit.
So you know still, like i said, boxing’s one of the only the only jobs you can get where you can get into that type of situation and still come back, definitely come back.
Definitely, you know he was sentenced uh by ontario county judge, frederick reid, to five years in prison after pleading guilty to felony second degree, assault and misdemeanor third degree.
Assault.
Whitfield uh will be on parole for two years after getting out of prison.
He was arrested by geneva police following the august 31st incident at the exchange street business.
We said whitfield punched and kicked another man during an argument and the man had to be taken to the hospital for treatment uh.
Then the assistant direct district attorney heather parker, heinz, who prosecuted the case, said that the man suffered permanent injuries.
She added that a woman who was trying to help the man was thrown over a balcony by whitfield and suffered minor injuries in addition to the prison, prison terms and parole.
Reid signed orders uh of protection, barring whitfield, from having contact with any of the victims and unfortunate man.
He had posted a 7-0 career before all this crap happened with six knockouts and he was looking like a really good promising prospect coming out of new york geneva, and you know coming out of the 360 boxing gym uh.
You know 360 boxing out of new york.
Uh, you know they they pride themselves on building.
You know world champion class fighters.
Definitely this kid was on his way to that kind of status, hopefully well.
Sitting inside, for this five years has um put him on that straight and narrow and uh.
I hope he allows boxing to be part of his life again.
Once again, you know, because, honestly, it’s never too late, i’m not definitely not.
Man, like i said just think, think of that the journey that bernard hopkins had to come through.
You know he’s in uh.
He’S in the hall of fame, first ballot, hall of famer, exactly just some hard work and dedication, so yeah stay up, keep your head up when you, when you get it when he gets out, you got a home here in canada, yeah american border.
That’S the other problem crossing the border right, pardon baby.
