Hello boxing fans around the world welcome once again to another episode of the scoop featuring the champ paula ray here on talk and fight, we’re live and we’ve got a special guest lined up to you tonight, i’ll leave it with you bola.
Why don’t you hook us up yeah today um it’s my pleasure to actually introduce a good friend of mine from back in the amateur days.
He is and should be seen as a canadian icon.
He is.
He has quite the resume when it comes to boxing uh nine-time amateur champion, but then, more importantly, he was national champion as a pro in two different weight classes.
At the same time, i don’t know i’ve looked.
I don’t know if that’s ever been done before.
I don’t know if it can be done again: um he’s that dominant he was uh, it was uh.
Nothing should have a pleasure watching him uh fight, especially in the amateurs um but uh.
Most importantly, like i said, he’s a good friend so with that being said, i’d like to bring on the troop adam g, troopish yo, what’s up big brain bola aka mount kilimanjaro.
What’S up my friend, how are you oh good man, i’m good? How are you keeping everything you know, i’m just i’m keeping and i’m alive and i’m healthy during these uh these uh terrible times we’re now in another province-wide lockdown like this is this has to stop not happy about it, not happy about it, but we just got Ta, i remember my coach charlie said well.
Well, how do they run in alaska? You know we just have to.
You know, figure out what we got ta do to survive.
You know like i was training my kids outside today on the dessert river.
It was awesome, and you know what the in coming from legendary charlie stewart you know he’s absolutely right.
You just said we have to adapt.
We have to find a way to make things work.
I remember the first time i went to nationals in boxing um and uh.
I think you were there.
I think you were there in uh.
98.
98 edmonton.
Yes, that’s right! You know we go way back we’re not only friends but we’re we’re teammates and uh yeah.
I was, and i remember dwight was my coach and he’s like you got ta go run.
You know like i don’t want to run in this freezing cold weather, but then he’s like look at the boys in quebec because we’re anticipating, uh bergeron being out there bergeron is running it’s a hell of a colder where he’s from than where i am, and more Importantly, help with the boys in edmonton.
You got sheldon hinton, um they’re running.
What’S your excuse, you just have to make it happen.
You just have to make it happen.
That’S yeah! It’S the it’s! It’S it’s been deemed the toughest sport in the world.
For a reason you know boxing boxing, as as a fighter is a few things it’s in the brain is in the heart, then you know the balls in the heart are the same thing, but um there’s a lot of different factors that that comes into play into To making a champion definitely ain’t that the truth, so how have you been pardoned? How have you been man? I’M i’m doing my thing.
You know i’m like killing myself to stay above water.
You know treading.
I loving this whole platform this this new uh, the show the scoop it’s derogatory, rocking momentum, so i i couldn’t be happier it couldn’t be happening.
Yeah we um for the for the viewing staff uh a little bit about an intro into your world.
How did you get into boxing? I know i i just started high school of a friend of mine talked me into joining the gym and i uh i fell in love with it and we me and this young little indian guy andrew cooner.
11 years later we had to become your uh roommates in the uh 2004 olympics.
Oh, do i remember those yeah and um? You know it was.
It was a.
It was a whirlwind.
It was uh, it was a fast.
It was a fast-paced career.
I had and um uh, i’m very fortunate.
You know not to be talking with you yeah.
I remember i remember 98, the 98 national team very well.
You know oh yeah, that was called up madminton.
Why boy was it ever? I just remember stat that they said um edmonton.
It get sometimes gets so cold that it’s illegal to be outside.
Well, i i i i live there for uh nine years yeah.
I know i i i turned my pro career there and you know that that made me a different, tough run.
I ran i ran outside for the my first year being pro.
My coach would follow me behind the car and i do you know i do my sex miles.
I give you a different tire kind of tough being out running that gold someone’s gon na have to pay.
That’S not even a bad idea.
That’S a good way to look at it, make them punish punishment.
Always i always hated running, and my coach, you know was a strickler with running.
I was like.
I would try to make it enjoyable as possible and listen to nice music and have nice shoes, but i hated it and someone’s gon na have to pay.
I don’t know, but you know i use my running as sometimes i use it as a benefit like uh.
I became a public speaker and i would have an hour speech and i would practice this hour of speech on my hour of run and i ended up.
You know perfecting it that way and little different choice.
I was you know i was from a young age.
I was a little hustler, i would i would.
I would take my winter jacket and i would turn it inside out, so it was bright orange and i write my name on the back of the jacket and i rate the windsor boxing club right uh during rush hour.
I’D run down, so everyone would see my name in the boxing club and you know i was always like this silence.
So yeah, that’s awesome! Yeah! That’S awesome! You do you miss edmonton.
You know i i’m originally from windsor and uh, i’m like 27.
I miss i.
I moved to edmonton, i was there for 10 years.
I do miss it.
Um ebitda is like uh a windsor on steroids.
It’S a blue color, tough town, tough winters, but the summers are beautiful.
I have i have a lot of friends there still um.
I was um, i was gon na move back there a couple years ago and but i’m still here, i’m in windsor still that’s awesome.
No! You got you’re back in uh in ontario.
Yes, when you turn, when you did you finish your career in edmonton, yep yep.
I might well i was i was living in vegas for a year i lost my life.
I lost my second last fight in, like vancouver, i uh.
I had my last fight in edmonton there’s back-to-back losses.
I just said you know what kenny rogers says.
You got.
Ta know when to hold them know when to pull them fair enough, yeah yo, i i fought for a long time.
23 years yeah, you know i, i i’ve i’ve seen fighters that have fought one fight too long, yeah and everyone.
I never wanted to be that.
Guy, so you know now, i just say i’m having fun so with it.
I i took a break for a year and and now i’ve been back for a year, but this covert has put a you know a monkey wrench in it, but i’ve been developing some like coaching wise.
I i’ve been developing some real real amazing fighters.
You you look, uh told me a stat that resonates with me huge in that you have gotten you have trained.
Is it eight national champions who you got from walking in the door learning how to box all the way to the title? Yes, yes, that i can’t take all the credit it would take.
You know boxing, it takes a team, it takes a you know.
It takes a a a a group of positive individuals and i can’t take all the credit.
But yes, i’ve been involved from taking these little morsels from from virginity to tonight’s to uh to having a gold national medal on their neck.
That’S incredible, and i guess it’s fulfilling and and it’s uh it’s very it’s very.
It hits me right in the heart.
You know i mean i remember one of my national champions from edmonton he’s raided.
Number five in the world is a heavyweight under 19 under 18 under 19 and his first fight he did so well.
He was, he was a young black kid from.
He was an african kid in that in alberta and he he got a standing ovation.
His first and i’ve never seen anything like it before, like i never seen a standing ovation for a little kid he’s like all right eleven.
I think it brought a tear to my eye and uh and he’s still rocking rolling out numbers and he’s doing some great great things.
Like my my coach started me, my coach uh made it like possible that i i joined the gym for free.
If i coach other kids and one of my first athletes, i come back, i come back to windsor about five or four years ago, and this great big native guy come up to me and goes hey adam.
Do you do you remember me, and i said no, it says you used to coach me in the in the nine in the early 90s and i stayed and i stared at him hard and i said i do remember you and he he’s a professional base.
A baseball pitcher in arizona yeah, so i’ve been like you just always been involved like with a lot of successful individuals and uh, i’m just blessed, i’m a blessed, not just to say the least like i was going to ask you.
How was how’s life after boxing treating you, but it sounds like you’re doing great um, it’s an adjustment.
Um, you know boxing is um.
It’S an adrenaline rush.
It’S uh, it’s uh, it’s a high and you end up being.
I did it for so long.
I become an addict of of that of that and um i feel fulfilled um with my athletes to you know, making their dreams come true and that you know that makes me feel really happy and – and you know i i did – i did what i had to Do like in the ring – and i i feel like i don’t know like you did you know it hey big right.
You know it, but i’m satisfied to to take that next step.
That’S good! Yeah! That’S awesome.
The bottom line is you make canadian history um time and time again, uh two-time olympian um, i still well.
You know what the fiasco that i went through in 2004.
Why i couldn’t go with you guys um yeah, i remember, but then 2008 you were the sole person to go and represent canada in the olympics.
How weird was that man i was proud.
I was just like yeah.
That’S my boy, but bottom line is weird.
Lady luck wasn’t on your side.
You end up not only drawing the olympic gold medalist first round, but also didn’t he win best boxer of the tournament.
Don’T quote me on, but i’m pretty sure he’s current world champion right now or in contention of that but yeah.
He number one in the world couple of curveballs, like you know we’re going into the ring, and someone was late going in so they’re.
Like my my the set my second, he they wouldn’t let him through the thing because his accreditation, so i’m like what the [ __ ].
So i look at this guy who i recognize from the old four olympics.
Yeah we become friends, our we become friends and i go work, the corner with me and he he was the irish olympic coach.
We met when we met friends four years previous.
He was the irish, well yeah just circumstances and that’s how it went like nothing was going.
Your way, nothing was going your way during that time.
I was just weird: it was uh, it was just uh, it was an experience, say the least oh yeah.
What is uh, what is what does uh boxing life look like for you nowadays? Well now, i’m on the other end of the spectrum like now.
I am i’m i’m coaching, but i’m also in the promotion side, like that’s what i’m opening a gym right, i’m i’m involved with opening a gym right now and uh.
It’S going to be like cutting level next uh, it’s going to be the best gym in the countries i’m trying to build is my goal and uh it was promoting.
But right now i got to make fighters that people want to watch that people will pay to watch and i’m doing that i’ve been uh.
I’Ve been working underground.
I started training this kid.
I worked with um just in his basement like when the pandemic first happened.
I started training with in his basement.
I’M ready ready turning pro.
He doesn’t have any fights yet three times sparring.
Are you ready to turn a pro? Oh yeah.
Jordan knows what time is yeah, but you know i’m really excited for the futures.
I just need like some little restrictions, to lift and give me some.
I just have a lot of big things in the works.
I got a.
I got a new gym, opening um.
You know my goal is to to not rival the best gyms, but just be the most dominant gym in the country that i wan na.
I wan na you know have all the champions i wan na.
Do it all i wan na.
Take it all and uh you know i had a year on, because i i was involved.
I fought for 23 years i coached from from like 16.
.
I never had.
I never had like two weeks off from boxing.
I never had two weeks out of the gym.
I was like every single day and never a break.
I was always so i had.
I took a year off had a couple projects.
I renovated some uh.
I did a lot of things for a year and uh.
I got that hunger back and uh it was.
It was needed and i get the hunger back and i have a bunch of talented amazing, hungry kids that that want to do amazing things, so i’m just trying to really guide them to be superstars.
That’S quite that’s.
Quite the aspiration, though, that’s all i know, yeah i’ve been i’ve, been i’ve been you know, on top for a long time, i’m hungry again, i’m ready to take it all over.
That’S awesome and make dreams come true baby.
What would you see being one like in the amateurs as long as you have? What changes would you like to see happen both in the amateurs and the pros? For me, the big thing that happened for the pros that i think is just nothing sensational and it’s going to catapult ontario boxing out of the stratosphere is the retirement of kenaishi um full stop agreed agreed.
I agree they’re they’re, making they’re making steps i see.
Well, i moved to alberta, i turned pro out in alberta, because ontario was the hardest commission in the world.
Persuasion i i didn’t want they they’re having like one pro fight a year.
Exactly edmonton was a hot spot, love boxing.
It’S like it’s a great fight, city and uh, and i i wish that ontario was, i would have blew up.
I would have blew up, you know winter and southern ontario, but um.
We can only hope that, well, the amateur the amateurs are in just as much turmoil and chaos, it’s, but i don’t really care about all these other outside distractions.
I’M right now, like i’m um, i’m a grassroots like i’ll.
Take a kid off the street like off the the dirtiest street and i’ll, make him into a world champion and then i’ll.
Take another kid off the other street on the other side of the street and i’ll make him that guy’s roommate at the world championships and i’ll.
Do this all the time i just i get the anecdote, i got the passion, i know the recipe for you know, and i just i know i know what i got ta do and i just got ta keep plugging forward and a lot of things are gon Na are gon na blossom and blow up.
There’S there’s a whole lot uh coming over the horizon in boxing, and i firmly believe that you are going to be an integral part in actually making canada making ontario making windsor a hot spot for boxing, to say the least um.
It’S not every day that i go off and i actually send a fighter to another coach, but with my athlete and uh, going to the university of windsor i’ve given her right and only because she’s gon na be in great hands.
Well, that’s that’s! Love! Baby! That’S love.
I got three.
I have three professional friends that want me to train their kids professional, successful fighters like ali mansoor.
He wants me to train his four kids.
Gilbaltera wants me training this kid frank white wants me to train his kid yeah like uh, gill’s kid uh current national, like heavyweight champion.
I took him to the uh.
I took him to the nationals two years ago in edmonton you got ta, go him out there wow real.
I have a lot of a lot of excitement about that one.
Yeah yeah! That’S awesome! Yes, with my former wrestling partner there uh ali monsoor, that’s awesome! Oh yeah audrey knows how to restaurant.
It was supposed to be a boxing match.
That’S the problem, uh anyways that was uh.
That was some incredible times, and i’m wishing you the absolute best like i said before, we need this.
We need this covered stupidity to end.
Like end um and let’s get back to boxing, i want to thank you for coming.
I i agree i agree ray i want to thank, i want to thank you kindly for uh coming out and uh gracing us with your conversation in your interview with, for you any time, it’s my pleasure to speak with you ray, you know and um.
